Using this item for a short period of time is nice and useful. You can take it out and clean it but leave it plugged in for a long time, So I will be unable to use it for what I want to add an additional USB port to my laptop for ongoing peripheral use. For example, if you wanted to use it just for travel or to allow several people to plug into the same port, it would be great.
