There isn't a battery in them. To work, they must be connected to a USB port. I haven't tried charging them with a portable USB charger.
There is no cover for the thumb.
A finger cover is only available in the purple color.
There isn't a layer between them. However, the pad is held in place by velcro. They can be taken out to wash the gloves or put into any velcro-compatible glove.

The heating pad is half the size of a business card, the cords are all over the place, and the gloves pill after just one use. These are not something I would recommend, and I had high hopes for them. I'm disappointed.
For my daughter's birthday, I bought these. They have made her very happy. They aren't too heavy to prevent her from crocheting while wearing them. I wish both pairs, not just the purple pair, had the full glove option. When doing crafts, I also wish they heated without the need to be plugged in to the USB. It's beneficial to people who have rheumatoid arthritis.
The gloves have only one pad. I was also dissatisfied with the size of the pad. I have small hands and thought it would at least work for me, but the pad barely covers the base of my palm or the back of my hand and doesn't do much to warm the entire hand; I'm very disappointed with these, especially since they claimed to have a heating element on both the top and bottom.
I like the fingerless gloves, but I can't use them with my work laptop because they aren't allowed. So having the hearing element isn't really beneficial. When I tried to use my USB power bank, the heating patch on my hands started to burn. They'd be fantastic if they were ultra-portable and had a rechargeable battery pack. It's not very useful if it's only hot when you're using your laptop.
The gloves are great, though the way the cord is set up, they work best if you only need your hands to be a foot apart, such as typing, but if you need to do anything that requires your hands to be warm, they are a letdown. The heaters they have work well but are bulky, and your hands are tethered together to close.
Except for a small square velcroed to the inside of the gloves with the fingers cut off, these gloves didn't produce enough heat. The hooded part that goes over the fingers was only on one of the two pairs.
These were purchased for my daughter, who suffers from raynaud's disease, and she now has two pairs, one for work and the other for her car. We live in Pennsylvania, where winters can be particularly harsh. Her hands stay warm, and her grip on the steering wheel isn't as tight as it was before. This is an excellent item.
Cords get in the way allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll If your hands are cold, they don't really warm up to a temperature that matters.
