There is a knob on one of the speakers that turns them on and controls the volume as well. They have great sound, plenty of bass, and a great knob on one of the speakers. I personally find the lights very pleasant, and they cycle through colors (it happens sometimes that the colors will not sync between the speaker pairs, but that makes for a more interesting presentation). That's just how computers work). Here's another thing people don't realize. It's not uncommon for usb cords to fail over time. These speakers are powered by a built-in usb, so the more you plug and unplug and move the usb, the faster it will break. It is the usb that fails, so the speakers fail as well. This should be understood and since I know this, and I know what kind of product I am buying, I am ok with this. When/if this happens, I will buy the same speakers again until I can afford the big expensive ones that It is the same price as the speaker itself to purchase a USB cord alone in a retail store, so this speaker is very well worth the $10 it costs. The rest of the world should share this same understanding as well. There is a great sound to them. I bought the three-way system with the subwoofer. When they realized that there are three different types of speakers to pick from, I realized why I thought the speakers lit up. There are three speakers and a mini subwoofer on this system It doesn't light up when the woofer is on. I wasn't expecting much from speakers in the under $20 category, so let's get that out of the way after all. These speakers are really cute for the price. The information you provided was exactly what I was looking for. There is no way that they will annoy your neighbors in any way. Even so, their volume does increase to a reasonable degree. This is one of the best sounding CDs you'll ever hear. There is just the right amount of bass and a wonderful full sound to it. This speakers are attached to my desktop computer, I was just looking for some inexpensive speakers, and I am very satisfied with the choice I made. I am not sure if you could find a better sounding speaker in the same price range, however. These aren't what you're looking for if you're looking for something that will rock the house to its foundations. These would not be the best choice if you're seeking a nice sounding speaker system to use with a desktop or office workstation, but if you want something that will work at a reasonable volume, they would.
