Make sure you understand (unlike me) that this is a router extension as well as an indirect modem extension! Connect this box to your router's out port, then connect all of your other devices to this box. In essence, The modem connects to the router, which connects to this box, and then all other devices are connected to this box. I apologize if I'm being a little repetitive, but I just don't want anyone else to waste an hour trying to figure out that concept. br>br>I figured it would work if I plugged the modem in first, then everything else. That was not the case. I have moments when I feel like Bill Gates and moments when I feel like a complete moron. I'm giving it five stars because I only recently got it to work and haven't had enough time to notice anything wrong with it.

If you're curious as I was, here are the internals of version 4. This switch has been turned on 8 times. I was taken aback when I discovered that there were no non-alcoholic beverages available. On the circuit board, there are solid electrolytic capacitors. On a switch, this is the most common point of failure. Over time, the caps swell up and stop working, rendering the switch completely inoperable. No non- I believe this switch will last a long time because of the solid caps used in its construction. Other positive aspects of this switch's construction include: The ports are shielded. br>br> Some switch manufacturers have begun to do away with the metal shielding that surrounds the ethernet ports. Despite the switch's low cost, I'm glad to see a shield included. Although it is unlikely to make a significant difference in terms of EMI, I am bothered when ports are not shielded. br>On the switch chip, there is a heatsink. Given its power consumption (2. 2), I don't expect this to get very hot. Although the power consumption is low (5 watts), a heatsink is included. It's also black anodized, which helps it cool down faster (for more information, see eevblog's discussion thread "The performance of a heatsink with a black surface"). br>A Kensington lock slot is now included on the back of this switch, which is not visible in the product image. If you want to keep the switch from finding a new home, this is a good option. It's worth noting, however, that opening the case is simple. At the bottom, there are only two Phillips head screws. If someone with a screwdriver wanted to, they could easily remove the top half of the case and take the entire PCB while it was still locked. If you're concerned about physical security, such as if you're using these in a school system, I'd suggest covering the screw heads with epoxy. br>br>One feature of the switch that I dislike is the ventilation holes, which make it more susceptible to dust and humidity. It appears that flipping the PCB so the switch chip is facing down, adding a thermal pad, and using the switch's metal case as a heat sink would be a better solution. Then there's no need to rely on airflow through the switch's internals. Most people won't be concerned about this, but if you're installing it in a damp basement or crawlspace, it's worth thinking about.

I couldn't be happier with the 8 port behind my TV and the 5 port in my office. AT was given to me. I was using T fiber and only getting about 100 mbps over wifi, which wasn't going to cut it. I bought an ethernet cable and wired up my PCs in the office, as well as my xbox, PS4, smart tv, cable box, cloud drive, and other devices behind the television, and everything is running at about the speed I pay for. The PCs get around 900 mbps through these switches, while the Xbox gets around 800 mbps. I was planning on getting the more expensive ones, but these are excellent! Why should you spend more money?.

The hardware itself is well-made and has a "business-grade" metal appearance. It comes with four rubber feet that can be attached to the desk, but they are left unattached in case you want to mount it on the wall. IMPORTANT: br>br> There are two versions of this product: version 1 and version 2. The main (and possibly only) difference is that V1 is only configurable via a software utility that must be installed from disc, whereas V2 is configurable via a web GUI, which is a HUGE plus for me. br>br>I was fortunate enough to receive the V2 product. I didn't order anything special, so I'm guessing the supplier got rid of all the V1s. From un- It took me 15 minutes to get from boxing to walking away. That's only because I was too engrossed in exploring all of the cool options. If you're used to this type of equipment, you might be able to get up and running in less than ten minutes. My first impressions of this device have been extremely positive. I have no reservations in recommending this to anyone.
