Questions & Answers

Is it possible to connect the ethernet port to a different switch, or is it only for management?

The RJ45 port can be used as a regular port.br>The idea is that this is an edge switch that provides 1Gb/s or 10Gb/s to the backbone and 10GB/s between the edge devices. It's ideal for connecting 1-to-many connections. 3 workstations to a high-speed internet connection While maintaining full network/Internet connectivity, a high-speed storage server, NAS, and other devices can be used. speed (assuming you have a gigabit or less Internet connection). br>You don't need to mess with any host files or creative routing to accomplish this. br>Be sure to update the firmware, as it corrects a bug that caused sluggish traffic between RJ45 and SFP ports. It runs at full speed on newer firmware versions.

Has anyone tried plugging a 10G RJ45 transceiver into one of these sfp ports? Converting 10g fiber to 10g copper ethernet is something I'd really like to do. ?

Is it possible to achieve 10gbe speeds using standard cat7 rj45 cables in the sfp, or do I need to use a different cable?

Cat7 (which isn't technically a US standard anyway) isn't required when using RJ45 sfp modules. Cat 6a must be capable of carrying 10 megabits over a distance of at least 100 meters. Cat 6 must be able to transmit data over a distance of at least 55 meters, which is significantly longer than the average home or small business run. While Cat 5e is not officially rated, it should be adequate for 10gbit over the lengths of runs used in homes.

Is it possible to use one fiber uplink to a data center, three fiber ports to different buildings, and copper to connect to another switch with this?

Yes. Consider it a toggle switch. The network for all five ports is the same. I've got two of them set up pretty much the same way you did.

I was completely taken aback
5/5

I don't think it's possible to make a better product. I'm not sure where to begin, but I'd be in good shape/happy if I could be the main sales guy for this company in the United States! When you're on a tight budget but still want the best 10GBit LAN setup at home or in your small office, there's simply nothing like this available on the US market right now. br>I work in a fairly large company and have dealt with high-level products for many, many years. Because of the cost, switching to 10Gbe is still a significant undertaking/challenge for businesses (or home network nerds like me). br>With this device, I was able to create the ideal, load-balanced 10GBe backbone between my NAS, ESXi development server, and gaming rig.
- The initial setup is fine and simple to set up right out of the box, but there is a steep, but manageable learning curve to unlock all of the features.
- The RouterOS ROM included with the router is fantastic! With this device, you'll get a COMPLETELY managed switch/router/bridge that you can configure exactly how you want it. It is something I would enjoy. Incl. Firewall, routes, VLANs, OpenVPN Server, NAT, ACL, and many other features are available. Basically, you can have whatever you want.
- And it does it all with a fantastic GUI and a command line that supports SSH. br>I can't say enough about how impressed I am with this device. I was thinking about how much it cost me. br>br>For the 10GBe PCIe NICs (dual port), I purchased some used HP cards on eBay, which worked flawlessly with both my NAS vendor and VMware DEV server. Each one cost me around $30. I would have purchased the 6/8 port version if I hadn't been so happy.

As a simple layer 2 desktop switch for PC/NAS, it has performed admirably thus far
5/5

As a local 10G switch, it plugs into my existing 1G copper home network and works right away. On my NAS cache NVMe SSD, it tests out at up to 600MB/s for large files, which is the same as what I got with a direct peer-to-peer connection. connection between two people 10gtek 10GBASE-T is what I'm using. Cable Matters LC cables and SR transceivers. I connected the 1G RJ45 to my existing switch and was able to use DHCP and SMB throughout the rest of the network without issue. br>br>Extremely reasonable price and excellent value. Microtik is rumored to be working on an 8-inch screen, so fingers crossed. For less than $600, you can get a 16-port model with future upgrades. As long as this continues to work well, I'll be first in line. For now, it's just the first day; I'll let you know if I run into any problems.

This is a fantastic little toggle
5/5

This little unit works right out of the box; no networking knowledge is required; however, I would recommend downloading Winbox and changing not only the default IP (192) but also the gateway IP (192). 168 1) But, just in case, I'll add a password. The OS allows you to do a lot of things, from setting up Vlans to turning off the lights, but it can also connect some 10GB devices. I'm getting great speeds from the server to the NAS, around 350 MB/s, which is quite impressive considering they're both RAID 6 spinners. br>br>Please excuse the first photo's rotation; I couldn't get it to work after spinning it in every direction. br>br>It's a must-have!.

I'd give it a six-star rating if I had the option
5/5

If you need a small 10Gb switch and are willing to learn how to use the GUI/Winbox app/console, this is the one to get. Yes, you can power it via PoE! I tested it with every SFP, SFP module, and DAC I had on hand. For the price, it is simply unbeatable. br>br>Tip: If you want to use a 1Gb SFP/DAC/module, you must manually set the interface's speed to 1G. Single gigabyte modules will not be recognized automatically. br>br>Please keep in mind that this is only intended to be used as a L2 switch. If you go beyond VLAN tagging, your performance will suffer. However, since it is only advertised as a switch, this isn't a major flaw.

The 10 gigabyte hard drive is simple to install and use
5/5

There are several recommendations for this device as the simplest way to get started with 10g at home or in a small business, and they are correct. It was literally as simple as plugging it in. My 10G devices were connected to the MikroTik via the standard ethernet port on my main switch. br>br>All devices have been connected to DCHP, and everything is working fine. br>br>Because the switch gets hot (really hot), I wouldn't put it in a tight space with no ventilation. br>br>Also, if you want to manage the switch, I believe you lose 10G because layer 2 functions require extra brains, reducing you to 5 or 2 gigabits. It's not the end of the world, though, because your disk read/write speeds may not be able to reach full 10g speeds in some cases. You won't be moving a gigabyte of data per second unless you're sending data back and forth between two NVMe drives or a fiber SAN controller with an SSD array.
