Questions & Answers

Is it 7200 or 5400 revolutions per minute?

All of the larger models are 5400, with the exception of the 1 TB (ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (ST2000DM008) models. As you select different disk size options, the listed speed and model number in the product description change. br>br>This corresponds to the information on Seagate's website - Drill down (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - BarraCuda - BarraCuda - BarraCuda - BarraCuda - BarraCuda - BarraCuda Learn More, then select 3 from the drop-down menu. THE 5 INCHES MODELS TAB (NOT THE 3 INCHES MODELS TAB) Tab for 5 inch PRO models). Then, next to any model, click on the data sheet to open a PDF with a table listing all of the models, as well as their drive speeds and other specifications.

Are there any cables for connecting to the internet that aren't included in the box?

There are no cables included in this package. On Amazon, you can purchase a SATA data cable as well as the most likely power cable for your computer. The power cable may already be connected to it in your computer, depending on your power supply - That is something that some people have, while others don't.

Is this a genuine 7200rpm? The model number, on the other hand, suggests that this isn't the case. ?

On Amazon, I purchased the ST4000DM004, which claims 7200 rpm, but my computer reports a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm.

Is the internal hard drive (st2000dm008) 2 TB cmr or smr?

I'm not familiar with the differences between SMR and SMR. CMR, but since someone said this shouldn't be used as a boot drive, I'll point out that I've used it as the boot drive for a dual-boot Windows 10 system. Xubuntu 20 is a Linux distribution that is based on the Ubuntu operating system. I think the load/unload cycle count is set way too liberally; it unloads way too quickly IMO, but that's easy enough to fix, and even if it isn't, the drive has about 3-months worth of life left. It has 5 years of load/unload cycles built in, and that is in the worst-case scenario where the computer is on all the time (which is my use case). Of course, if it's just a data drive and you use an SSD or M. 2 In the case of a boot drive, this is a moot point because the drive is not used on a regular basis.

Selected User Reviews For Seagate BarraCuda 3TB Internal Hard Drive HDD – 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 5400 RPM 256MB Cache for Computer Desktop PC – Frustration Free Packaging (ST3000DM007)

I returned the first one because it wouldn't detect, and I had the same problem with the replacement
3/5

I had to go to Seagate's website and download their disc wizard, but it worked after that. There are no instructions included in the package, only a warranty paper, so you'll have to figure it out on your own. This is the first time I've needed this on any of my hard drives.

7200 RPM isn't what you're looking for
4/5

I chose this product because the description stated that it was a 7200 RPM drive, but it is only a 5400 RPM drive, as you can see from the photo I uploaded. If I had known this, I would have chosen a different brand. I gave it four stars because the drive works and is quiet; however, I deducted one because the speed was lied to me.

The ST8000DM004 is a SMR device, not a CMR device
3/5

Seagate has remained tight-lipped about the situation. While I appreciate the drive's capacity, the fact that Seagate failed to disclose that it was SMR technology rendered it useless for my needs, which were to use it as a RAID 1 XBOX external hard drive. br>br>For those unfamiliar, SMR stands for Shingled Magnetic Recording, as opposed to Conventional Magnetic Recording. The way shingled works is similar to how roofing shingles work, in that the pieces are laid down in a specific order. The problem is that if a single bit needs to be rewritten, the entire shingle sector must be rewritten (yes, I'm intentionally simplifying the tech). Unless you rewrite portions of the drive on a regular basis, this should not be a problem. In a RAID configuration, for example. br>br>Because this was not disclosed, completely NEW drives and a NEW enclosure will be required to replace this unit, which is already in service. br>br>AS A RESULT, AVOID THESE DRIVES EXCEPT FOR OFF-SITE BACKUP PURPOSES, AS THEY WILL CAUSE YOU HORRIBLE PROBLEMS. Seagate should be ashamed for deceiving the public and then blaming the public for refusing to buy more expensive corporate drives when the truth was revealed. br>br>At this point, I've heard that Toshiba drives aren't being misrepresented, so I'll be buying them from now on, as Seagate has forever lost my trust as a result of this. br>br>I was using an 8TB hard drive: ST8000DM004 is the serial number for this product.

Please read the instructions for setting up this drive on Seagate's website; "easy to install" to me means that the drive comes with the simple instructions needed to set it up
3/5

This is not the case. They are also not included in the "User Manual" for the product. It's extremely inconvenient for those of us who replace hard drives every 5 to 10 years and can't recall what was needed the last time.

Noisy, sluggish, buggy, and so on, with terrible distracting vibrations as the head seeks
3/5

A louder (faster spinning) drive would mask that noise a little, but this one, being otherwise quiet, really slaps you in the face with the noise when the drive is active. According to their technical specs, this thing is dead silent, but mount it to a case and the vibration turns it into a speaker, amplifying the head noise. You should definitely suspension mount it with foam or something similar. br>br>Performance would start out fine for a while, then degrade to a crawl for a long stall out before returning to normal speeds. I've narrowed it down to the software I'm using to monitor the temperature of the hard drive. It's horrible, and it's not something I've experienced with other brands of drives. Either there's a bug in the drive electronics, or it's just so underpowered, that requesting SMART data while the drive is busy reading/writing causes the drive to stall out for up to a couple minutes at a time. br>br>The read/write performance is quite poor. An 8TB WD Red (not "pro" either) with 33% faster RPM rate than this 8TB Segate reads/writes 33% faster than this 8TB Segate. That's not a minor distinction, but it creates a significant bottleneck when backing up or restoring your data. If it weren't for the other issues, I'd be fine with it. br>br>In addition, the warranty terms are quite harsh. Not only is the warranty only for two years, but there are also strict limitations on how much data you can read and write to your drive during that time. If you frequently backup your drive, or if you zero/scrub it for secure data deletion, or if you do anything else, your warranty may be voided much sooner than expected. And you won't find out until you've paid to return your hard drive to them. br>br>And for all of these flaws. Seagate hard drives are only slightly less expensive than Western Digital hard drives. I am not affiliated with either WD or Seagate in any way. Many years ago, I preferred Seagate drives, but they appear to have given up and fallen behind their main competitor. Even as I've been having problems with WD drives and have decided to try Seagate again, I've discovered that things have only gotten worse. AVOID!.

It's very quiet
5/5

I can't even tell it's there because of my near-silent case and CPU fans. This is almost certainly the last spinning disk drive I'll ever buy, and I'm glad to be going out on a high note.

Horrible
3/5

About a month ago, I placed an order for the 2TB Barracuda. It was a disaster from the start. With a movie playing, it made an audible clicking noise that could be heard from across the room. Later, when I called Amazon to inform them of the situation, they were very understanding. They quickly demonstrated that they would be of no assistance to me. "How come it took you almost a month to decide to report it?" " First and foremost. What is the significance of this? Second, and most importantly. I was in a bad way. As a result, I made a direct phone call to Seagate. They were much more responsive, and after trying some redundant technical diagnoses, they decided to provide a free RMA for the product. (With the exception of the $1 hold they put on my card because they were sending me a new product so I could transfer my data and return the old one. ) Everything was fine until I transferred the data and used crystaldiskinfo to discover that I had been sent an older, slower model. I've been on hold with them for nearly an hour now.

These are excellent hard drives, and "ALL" of them are still working perfectly.
