I got it for my Surface Pro 6 and it does the job. You can use it without the power supply if the disc spins at a slower speed, such as playback on a music CD in real-time. Using a CD when you are installing software from the Surface Pro 6 is not possible because the Surface Pro 6 does not provide enough amps. the case if you use the external power option - the Surface Pro would continually disconnect and reconnect the disc drive.

I suspect there is a reason why many external dvd drives do not work with Surface models because of the low voltage output on the USB cord. Fortunately, this one works on Surface models and has a power cord to power the drive. Now that I have my Surface Pro 3, I can load programs.

As for the software that is needed to operate this device, there is no additional software that is required. It is truly plug and play. When I connected the USB cable provided with the drive, my Windows 10 computer recognized it instantly. Without any problems, I was able to play a music CD and display a photo CD. In order to burn your own CDs, you will need to download CD burner software. The device comes with a wide variety of free programs that can be downloaded online.
Overall, I am very pleased with this quiet, compact device.

Then my Windows 7 Dell laptop DVD/CD drive started acting weird, and my Surface Pro 3 didn't come with a DVD/CD drive. I decided to get this for my Surface Pro 3, which runs Windows 10 but does not come with a DVD/CD drive. It ended up being a purchase that could be used with two I was able to set both up without any problem. On one of them (can't recall which one) I had to restart before it was recognized, but everything seems to work as it should. On my Surface Pro 3, the additional USB power port can be plugged into the USB power port of the device's power supply brick, which is nice since my device only has one USB port. My experience with this purchase has been very positive.

There are some issues with this product and it cannot be switched on and off. It would just "skip" continuously until it was disconnected. I have tried using it multiple times but it would always "skip" After contacting customer service (by email), I received a rapid reply, but it was not useful. As a result of completing a survey, I was then given instructions for "repairing" the problem, which were baffling to follow and after trying my best to do, I still wasn't able to get it to work. It is a product I wouldn't buy again, as I am unable to use it and will likely throw it away. My laptop no longer has a dvd or CD drive. So I decided to buy an external one so I could check I bought it because it was at a good price and it received good reviews, right away, and a few Microsoft ME files opened up Wow, what an amazing blog!
