I'm a semi-professional writer and editor. I'm a professional photographer who relishes the opportunity to test cameras because I adore them. I'm really looking forward to this one because it's such a unique product. My review will primarily focus on whether or not you should purchase this camera (the Sony ZV-100). 1) versus a DSLR or even a smartphone. br>br>*IF STILL PHOTOS ARE YOUR PRIMARY INTEREST, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CAMERA. The DSLR is the camera to use if you want to take still photographs. This camera also allows you to take photos, but its main purpose is to share video content. br>br>*The camera's main selling point is how simple it is to use. You don't need to know technical details like which aperture to use, what ISO to use, or what shutter speed to use because it takes care of everything. It has auto focus (which is far superior to that found on DSLRs) and a flip screen that allows you to monitor yourself while recording. br>br>*Because of its size, it is far superior to a DSLR. This thing is *so* small and light. You'll be all set if you purchase the accessory kit that includes the wireless grip/tripod. This is especially useful if you're vlogging while walking or talking to the camera. br>br>*Has a slow-moving nature. Time-lapse, bluetooth, and wifi are all features that this camera has. br>br>*Advantages of a smartphone over a regular phone: This camera has a much larger and better image sensor. The adage "the bigger the better" applies to image sensors, which is why DSLR cameras have such an advantage (but they're also too big to carry around). This improves your image quality significantly. This one has a much better microphone as well. (With the DSLR, you'll need to purchase a separate microphone. ) ) You can purchase a separate microphone for this camera, but the one that comes with it is quite good. br>br>*Ideas for improvement: It comes with a fairly limited set of software. Especially when it comes to video editing. On the plus side, if you do your vlogging in one continuous take, you may not need to do much editing. br>br>*The lenses are fixed and cannot be changed. This is advantageous in that you always have everything you require, but it is disadvantageous in that if your lens is scratched or cracked, you will need to purchase a new camera. br>br>*There isn't a flash - Vloggers, on the other hand, should not have a problem with this. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone was considering buying it for still photography only. br>br>*The battery life was only average. It wasn't perfect, but I've seen worse from other cameras. If you think you'll be doing a lot of long sessions, I'd recommend getting a backup battery. Overall, I believe this is a fantastic and versatile camera for those who vlog or produce video content. Although the price is higher, you can buy a DSLR at this price point, if you're not into technical things or would prefer something more user friendly, this is the way to go.
This camera is designed specifically for vlogging, but it has a fatal flaw that renders it useless for vlogging. The battery cover has a tripod mount built in. To put it another way, you must remove the tripod mount every time you need to replace the battery. And if you're constantly on the go, as a vlogger is, changing batteries is a major pain. The SD card is also integrated into the cover, so if you buy this camera, be prepared to do a lot of tripod mounting and dismounting.
The camera does not come with a charger, so keep that in mind. It's a bad move, particularly for those who have never owned a Sony camera.
Let me begin by saying that, as a bit of a gearhead, I've used dozens of cameras in the last few years. I've used full-frame DSLRs, mirrorless full-frame DSLRs, and APS-C DSLRs. I've had the Fuji X100V and other C options, as well as micro 4/3 cameras. With a growing family, I've discovered that, while I enjoy photographing my children as they grow older, capturing videos is what really piques everyone's interest. I could take 1,000 photos on a family vacation, but the video will be what the family wants to see, not the photos. I realized that a more engaging video option was required for this. Aside from having a 7-year-old daughter, she's starting to want to make her own videos, which I upload to her own YouTube channel. br>br>Advantagesbr>- It's nice to have a small camera with a fast lens. It's possible that the lens will be longer or wider. There are numerous things that could have been done differently. Why don't you request a 12-month subscription? Do you have a 500mm lens? It's a good compromise for what it is; it has a good enough range and a fast lens, both of which are necessary for a 1" sensor. The 24- Without an external light, 200 would have been too slow to shoot indoors.
- The screen on the front flips up. It makes shooting talking head videos easier, and the fact that it can be mounted on a tripod while still having a hot/cold shoe for an external microphone or light source is fantastic.
- The layout of the buttons. It's great to have a record button and a tally light. Consbr>- br>br>- br>br>- br>br>- br>br>- b A better use of a touch screen interface would have been fantastic. For the most part, Canon gets it right, but Sony could do a lot better.
- I wish there had been a mode dial and/or more front dials. However, if we had to choose between what we have in the ZV- and what we have in the ZV-, we would choose the ZV-. No, the stabilization isn't the best, and it's not great on standard. br>br>Things to notebr>No, the stabilization isn't the best, and it's not great on standard. br>br>Things to notebr>No, the stabilization isn't the best, but I'm ok with what we have. br>br>Things to notebr> It's better on active, but there are still crops. This is why I recommend a gimbal for certain types of vlogging, such as on a tripod or with a talking head, but not if you plan to walk around and talk to yourself. No, the battery isn't the best, but it's small and there are plenty of generic options available. No, the box does not include a charger. These days, most cameras do not come with one. No, you won't get the ultra-thin depth of field with this; it's a 1" sensor, after all. br>br>For the price, size, and features, it's the best option I've found so far; it's not perfect, but any camera enthusiast will tell you there isn't one. It's a matter of weighing the benefits and drawbacks to determine which option has the most benefits and the fewest drawbacks for your requirements. Consider this: if the perfect camera existed, there would be no compelling reason to upgrade to the next model. As a result, you have to believe that manufacturers withhold a little here and there on purpose.
Internal microphones are completely ineffective. The image quality is outstanding! After I get a new one, I'll update. The first one I sent back appeared to be in perfect condition. That's the way this camera works. br>br>THE INTERNAL MIC IS AWFUL, AND THERE IS NO CONTINUOUS SHOOTING AS THEY SUGGEST! The video is divided into ten-minute segments. There isn't a single continuous video file. br>br>The audio isn't working. It occasionally fails, and when it does, there is a hissing and strange white noise in the background that pulsates with my voice as I speak. Ocean waves can be heard in the background. Even with the dead cat and in a completely silent room with no wind. The image quality is fantastic! br>br> In addition, the smooth skin effect improves your appearance. Those are the only two reasons to purchase. br>br>But it's Sony's claims that this camera can record indefinitely that irritate me the most. THIS IS NOT COMPLETELY TRUE. As you "continuously" record, the video is broken down into individual 10-minute video files; when I contacted support, they said a new file is created once it reaches 2GB.
