There is something I don't quite understand about this question. There is no point in having a loose eyepiece barrel, but if the old diagonal isn't locking the eyepiece tightly it would do the trick. It seems that some eyepiece barrels fit differently within the standard diagonal than others. There is a nice twist to this one. You should be able to solve that issue. I've always been able to keep everything I need securely in place with it.
The diagonal and eyepiece should work if you're using a regular angle and eyepiece.
You might want to try turning the red ring if you're talking about that. The eyepiece should be better secured when you turn it clockwise. When it is turned counterclockwise, it will become tighter. It's a no-brainer It's a great diagonal, but the unit I received was loose. Having used this diagonal a number of times, I'm quite familiar with it. This is a product I know well and appreciate quite a bit. I received the same unit as before, but it is very different from the previous units. There is a loose area in the tube between the eyepiece insert and the tube. As of right now, I am only able to give two stars. It's because I know this I piece is good and I do not want to give it one star. As soon as I get a chance, I will contact Orion to see if they can handle this issue.

It is a good thing that Twist Tight collar secures My Celestron NexStar 127 came with a Celestron diagonal eyepiece. I replaced it with the Orion twist tight star diagonal, and the fit is perfect. I didn't notice anything loose about it. Despite making firm contact with my eyepieces without leaving any marks, it grips them securely. My new one has a much better visibility than the one I replaced. You can operate the twist tight with your bare hands or gloved hands at the same time, and it is easy to use. Construction is all metal with an anodized aluminum collar that is twist tight. This is a great product and it works great. It fits very tightly and it has great looks as well. Another reviewer and I have had the same problem with the tube receiving the eyepiece turning and shaking. The red ring around the eyepiece holds it in place, so tightening it has no effect.
