The screws on the SMALLRIG camera cage for EOS M50 do not correspond with anything on the grip. I'm not sure if it "wasn't meant" for it, but I assumed it would be designed with some kind of universal ideology in mind. Yes, it's sturdy, but it doesn't stand up and down; I have to fandangle it to get it to work, and it's not a great third point of contact; screws also come loose after light use; keep an allen key set on hand!.
Following is what I bought based on the following description: SIDE HANDLE FOR CAMERA CAGE The SmallRig Mini Side Handle 2916 is made for mirrorless, digital, and other small camera cages. Two 1/4"- The side of your camera cage is secured with 20 screws. Any cage with two 1/4"-sized holes (SmallRig 2916) SmallRig Cage 2999, 2493, 2087, and others have 20 threaded holes on the side with an 18mm distance, which is a little off for my Canon M50. My error was not reading reviews, where I learned that I am not the only M50 with this issue. I've been informed that I have the ability to return or replace items: Eligible until August 14, 2021, which won't help me because I won't be back until September 8th, and returning by mail by that date would cost me three times as much. 14th. I'm disappointed in the lack of clarity in the description, and even on the website, it's unclear which handle fits the M50 cage. I don't recommend ordering the side handle for the 2168b cage until you're sure which one is correct. The M50 cage and the incorrect handle are excellent, beautiful, and well-made; however, their description and information are inaccurate. I'm now stuck with a functional handle. Thank you.
Most of my work is with weddings, and I usually cover the entire event, so a portable camera rig is essential for 6-person shoots. Jobs that last eight hours. Don't be fooled by the weight; this is a well-made, sturdy item. The handle's top section is made of metal, and it's here that you'll find three 1/4" screw mounts for various accessory add-ons. The majority of the handle is hard plastic with dual rubber sections for excellent grip below the metal portion. Another nice feature is that the handle is essentially ambidextrous because the part that secures the handle to the camera cage can be unscrewed and flipped around with the included tool, allowing the handle to be mounted on either the right or left side of the camera cage. Overall, this is a fantastic product for the price, and it's the ideal complement to any lightweight camera rig.
I had hoped to be blown away by this handle, but alas, I am not. Even though I have small hands, I find this handle to be poorly designed. The handle is just long enough to accommodate all four fingers. My knuckles keep hitting the sharp edge due to the small distance between the handle and the mounting bracket. I intended to use this to transport my DSLR with a heavy lens, and while it does the job, it isn't as comfortable as I had hoped.
The rig's holes do not line up with the grip's screws. This will be returned and a different option will be pursued.
It's ok. I wasn't expecting a plastic handle, and the image made it appear as if there was a coldshoe on top, which there wasn't. I had hoped for a lot more for the price. There are alternatives that are far less expensive.
The addition of this mini side grip to my small cell phone filming rig was ideal. I used a quick release plate to convert the dual tripod screw on my phone holder to a single tripod screw, and I also have a matching quick release on my tripod, so I can quickly switch from fixed to handheld. It's a lot easier to use than a folded tripod, and the grip is very comfortable to hold. Smallrig has always provided me with high-quality products at a reasonable price, and this grip is no exception.
Everything becomes a lot better as a result of this. This is something I should have had a long time ago. If you use a cage, this SmallRig side handle is a good option.
