Yes, I use this with phones that don't have caller ID, and you can even connect it to an answering machine before connecting it to a phone. It's just a simple line in/line out connection with markings for hooking it up.

IDs are only good for a short period of time.
It's extremely difficult to remove caller names. It takes four to five times of pressing the delete button for the caller's phone numbers to be removed.
You must plug it in for it to work, and the caller id will not display a name or phone number. duane.
This device has a backlight, but it is so dim that it barely counts as one and is practically useless! The only reason I didn't give this item a one-star rating is because it supports caller name rather than just number.
Although it advertises a "backlit" display, it does not have one. Only the "contrast" can be changed.

This unit replaced one of five I purchased several years ago because I was fed up with dim displays and having to replace batteries on a regular basis. Every one of them necessitates the use of a plug-in device. However, because of the backlit display, it always works and is easy to read.
So far, so good; it displays the dinosaur's name and number, has a nice backlight, and could be a little bigger, but it's the best of what's available today.
