A typical led array would be powered by a small 5v, 90 watt (18 amp), convection cooled (no fan) power supply. At a current of 18 amps, about 900 LEDs should be able to be powered. I didn't get to try them at 020 amps each. The product is smaller than what you'd find in a typical overseas manufacturer's supply. Meanwell is well-known for its low-cost LED supplies, and it controls a significant portion of the market. I believe there is room for a new generation of smaller power supplies that use surface mount technology, as this supply still had a lot of thru hole devices on a single-sided PCB.
For around $20, I ordered a Meanwell 100W 5V PSU. It has a small footprint. br>br> I put 50 watts of LEDs in it and the voltage didn't drop at all, which is fantastic. It was warm/hot to the touch after about 2 hours of load under 50 watts, but not plastic melting or skin burning, after about 2 hours of load under 50 watts. You should make sure that your enclosure is ventilated. You'll also want to wrap the terminal area because it lacks a plastic "guard. ".
The package is extremely small. It's hard to believe a Mean Well power supply can deliver so much power in such a small package. Because of its small size, it's ideal for storing LED lighting inside waterproof cases. I'm definitely going to buy more of these.
DC power supply with a low form factor. Similar supplies are outperformed without the use of a noisy fan. Love it.
