A 198 pound athletic build with a 34 waist and 5'11" height suited my frame well the large worked for me. This wasn't a slim or tapered fit, but actually was not baggy or loose overall either. My judgment would be that it was perfect This is for a large group. In the case of a slim fit, it may be a good idea to size down.
The chest size on me is about 51 inches so I'm a 3x when it comes to vest because a 3x runs from 52 to 54 inches so I would guess a 5x might run up to 60 inches so I suggest measuring your chest size that should give you a better idea

In all honesty, I was blown away by the quality of the product for the price. I carefully examined it and could not find any imperfections, I will order a second one in a smaller size because I intend to lose some weight between now and December when I wear it.

The stock of my body is more viking-type, as I weigh 300 pounds and stand 6'4" tall. I could have it taken in at the waist, but I like it just the way My favorite way to wear it is to wear it around the house and to go out. It is an amazing vest, both in fabric and construction. In this photo, you can't really see the details of the pattern. There is no middle opening to the vest, but a overlapping effect almost like one would see if a peacoat was buttoned up. This vest has a mullet-like design with a longer back and a shorter front, as can be seen in the photograph. I find the front of this tank doesn't completely cover my belly, causing it to look like a crop top. However, it goes with a shirt underneath or some high waisted pants so it's not so horrible. I like the fit of the vest, but it's a bit baggy around the arms and chest. Nonetheless, it's a good piece of clothing to have. I added a gold trim to mine in order to match an outfit's theme, but it is not provided with the purchase.
In my case, I ordered the 4XL size because I had ordered the product from a previous buyer whose size was too small, even after going up two I ordered the 4XL just to be on the safe side. The material is superb and after taking it in at the sides and chest, it fits perfectly!! This is a great product. The only reason I gave it a 4 star rating is that the available sizes change and after contacting the seller to exchange, I was told to return it to Amazon for a refund and then re-purchase it. Very well made vest perfect for steampunk, musicals, and other character roles. The fabric and the construction are of the highest quality. This garment held up beautifully during school musical rehearsals and performances for two weeks in a row, and it still looks fantastic today.
