You could get the XS which is a 4/5 for him if you want the next size up. My son is 5 and wears a medium, and he loves it. The room is plenty big enough for him. They will dry much faster if you air-dry them rather than using a dryer. No need to worry about shrinking. A small size 6/7 would be followed by a large size 10/12 and a xlarge size 14/16.
The shirts shrink after washing, so you need to get them one size bigger. It's for older kids. The 8-year-old I purchased this shirt for wears a small, so I ordered a medium and it fits

Here are the t-shirts that I purchased My little grandson was 5 years old, and I wanted to give him some shirts. His age was also young for him - he was around four years old. When I was a little boy, I wore size 4 at the time. I think "big boys" is not literal in the title, but they are meant to be figurative, like when you are speaking to a little boy but you call him a "big boy." It is my hope that this will be helpful.

Here's an update Sadly, I don't think my 4 year old toddler will be able to wear these all summer after washing them. Hanes is a thing of the past for me. A great deal of junk goes by their name. Tie dying is a common use of these kind of tee shirts. The shirts I purchased last summer turned out to be smaller than I had predicted. I was just stocking up and looking at last summer's shirts. Over a number of washings, all of them shrank considerably. As a result, almost all of our tees ended up on our smallest. She has got good news, but her brothers and cousins do not see it the same way. Aside from shrinking, all tee shirts remained in good condition.
