It doesn't seem there is a clear difference between large and x-large from the size chart when I looked at it originally I ordered a large which came as a 14/16 for my boy who is 10 years old and weighs 95 lbs and stands 4'9". Having the size of a T-shirt is normally what he wears I have owned shirts and sweaters in this size for a 14/16, but this sweater is too small for him, he will only be able to wear it during Because you will be wearing an undershirt, I would definitely suggest going up a size. A size XS would have probably been better for him, as this goes nearly to his knees He has an impressive length on him

This was a size small for my 6 year old, and though he may find it to be a bit large, he'll still be able to use it a lot. The item is of high quality - The fabric is soft, thick, and comfortable. He probably would've been better off with an XS, since the leg opening is almost knee-high On him the sleeves are rolled and he has a long length to wear.
