There are numbers on the size chart, but you can only order a s, m, or l. What size do you think my skinny 9-year-old should be?

Maybe a middle ground? My son is older (15), but he is very skinny and has not yet reached puberty, so he ordered a large, which fits him snugly.

Do your legs have a snug fit?

My son is tall and skinny, so I was concerned that they wouldn't fit him properly, but they did. It's a fantastic resource! They are fantastic.

These are nice boxer briefs that aren't too tight but aren't too loose

However, I purchased these for my son with the expectation that they would be compressive, but they are thin and stretchy. They don't appear to be suitable for when he engages in sports activities.

These are fantastic in every way. For my son, I purchased smalls in one color scheme and mediums in a different color scheme. I like how long it is now. The buttocks are completely covered. Soft and pleasant to the touch. They haven't made any complaints. I'll keep buying these as long as they fit my needs.
