The cap is taken off. Push it up from the bottom of the brush. I recently purchased a second one because it is a good brush.

This lip brush appeared to be ideal, but putting the cap on to make the bristles come out required two hands to keep the cap on and the bristles out. It's a bad design. It would be a good product if the cap clicked into place or was tight enough to keep the bristles out for use; I don't think anyone wants to use a lip brush that requires two hands to use. It's just not designed to be practical. Some people seemed to enjoy it, so it's possible I got a bad one. However, I will return it the next day. I'm going to try and scrub my 20-year-old Mary Kay retractable lip brush and keep using it.
I had to make some changes to the original; After I returned the first brush, the seller sent me a replacement brush on their own initiative. The original was probably fine, but I hadn't purchased it with travel in mind, so I didn't realize that the retractable feature relies on the top being inserted into the base in order for the brush to pop out and be used. The replacement brush appears to be in good condition, but there are no instructions included, and despite the seller's best efforts, I suspect they're based in China (I can't tell from the listing), so communication is a bit hazy. I simply avoid the Chinese connection whenever possible due to concerns about employee working conditions, etc.

This lipstick had been on my radar for a long time. I'm glad I found it on Amazon because the stores didn't have it. The brush picks up color well and applies it smoothly, and it stays clean in the cap, which I appreciate.
I had to first reshape the tube before removing the brush with tweezers. When I tried to use the brush, it would not stay out of the tube and would return to the tube container. Other reviewers should have gotten more of my attention. Do not order it unless you want to be frustrated with the brush and irritated with yourself for buying it.
I've been using this product for a long time. When I had to throw away my old brush, I spent weeks trying to find a replacement. I went all over the place looking for it! It was no longer being carried! Then it occurred to me that I had forgotten about AMAZON. It was there. I got exactly what I was looking for.

Remove the cap, slide it on the other end, and the retractable brush pushes up, which is ideal if you need something on the go. The brush isn't too small for me, but it's just right. The brush has an excellent balance. At a fantastic price, this is an excellent beauty tool.
