Since I've used it for years, it's become a staple in my life. Aside from being a side sleeper, I also enjoy reading. It has never happened to me that my pillow had residue on it. However, if you scratch that area, it will get under your nails. In any case, the overall color will not be affected.
In my experience, the light brown (not the lightest brown) works well for my medium brown hair and is the closest match to my natural hair color. It would appear you have very dark roots if your hair were any darker.
You can clean it out with one shampoo, but you should know it's intended only for root touch ups. If I used it to cover my entire head, I wouldn't feel comfortable. Having a somewhat sticky texture, it has a bit of bite
