I am 6'0", plus 240 pounds, so trying to wear it crossbody, it exactly sits on the hip, but if I wear it straight down shoulder side, it sits another hand span below. You can take a tape measure and crossbody drape it over your shoulder to get a rough idea of where the bag opening will be. The strap on mine measures in about 52 inches, so you could take that length and crossbody drape it over your shoulder to get a rough estimate.

You need to get it. Take a look at the size specs to make sure your bag doesn't differ from what you expected. Although the quality of the bag otherwise is extremely good, I was disappointed that it was damaged. A great bag otherwise, and I'm very sad that it was damaged. Having looked at Maxpedition bags for quite some time, I decided to buy this bag specifically for a trip to Costa Rica. After an investigation, I found alternative solutions since I did not want to pay the price for something I would not need every day once I returned. My Red Rock bags were among the first I sought out on their website after I had owned quite a few. With its ample space, I can easily bring all the gear I need on jungle hikes (including tarantula spotting light) and it will take my venerable but dented SIGG water bottle with ease. There were no hiccups with the zippers or construction, and I had no issues with the seams. The Red Rock Hipster Sling is certainly an excellent hiking back if you're looking for one - it's highly recommended. It helped me to carry a full bag with a liter of water and the padded shoulder eased the weight.
As I was getting ready to leave on a trip, I did not have enough time to return it for a new one. It's barely big enough for a full-size pistol like a Glock 20 – but it might be able to fit. No big deal. It's a very small pack, make sure you check the size before you buy it. So far, construction is fine I have gone hiking with it a few times and it has held up well. It comes with a drawstring pouch that lets you carry your items I think this is a poor job and does not reflect well on the company. My only gripe is that the shoulder cushion thingy slides around while walking and might be better designed if it had a belt keeper to keep it in place at all times. It could be better thought out how to use the snap/holster pocket Velcro is on the back to attach extras, but there is not much room for too many extras. The bag is not meant to function as a day bag, but rather as a cool shoulder bag for a water bottle and some other stuff.
This is a bag I purchased to carry while hiking or geocaching. What a great idea! It's just the right size and has just the right number of pockets to hold everything I need on a hike or geocaching expedition. An oversized water bottle fits nicely in the pocket on the side.
