While it is firm, I would not call it hard. A mattress pad is on top to keep it from getting wet, and I think he likes it just the same. A great buy on a budget, this mattress is really nice and the price is great. You can tell it's premium since it doesn't smell like chemicals. The mattress is said to be waterproof, but just by feeling the texture, I am not convinced that it is 100% water-resistant.

This is not a good gift for babies. Buying this product is not a good idea. I put this mattress in my baby's crib after he had a hard time transitioning from his bassinet. It has been out of the box for about 3 months, which should have been enough time to get rid of the new smell. With the baby sleeping in the crib, he is smelling like a permanent marker in the morning.
