Alternatively, you can remove the cover if you wish, though I'm not sure if it is necessary since the cover is washable and replaceable.
It is always a good idea to have a spare. It's necessary to line dry the cover that comes with it, but when kids are sick, it's easy for them to puke for very long periods of time (sometimes multiple times per day).

In order to protect the inner support of this mattress, it comes with a waterproof shell encased in a waterproof bag, but we used our own mattress protector underneath the sheets so that we wouldn't have to unzip the bag fully and put it back in place. Every time we do the laundry, we put it in. While it is okay, it is a little pricey for a product that ended up being a humbug in the end. It is likely that moisture got trapped between our mattress protector and the one attached to the bed, causing our child to get sweaty heads. Right under his head, a bunch of mold/mildew grew on the mattress. I had a naturepedic baby/toddler mattress for over 3 years and it never had this issue, however, I'm not sure if this babyletto mattress would have been okay if we hadn't used Hindsight has convinced me to opt for a regular breathable mattress so I could put a traditional protector on it and I wouldn't have to deal with unzipping and retying it to keep mold at bay.
In a nutshell, I wear it in my babyletto lolly as if it were a glove. There were a lot of reviews that made me skeptical, but I am glad I went with this mattress rather than a different brand. All the sides of the mattress are straight, so I do not have to worry about my little ones getting wedged in them. This mattress was so clean and spick and span that it looks like new. Looking forward to using this item once my LO is a bit older since I am very pleased with the appearance of it.
This mattress is amazing! I love it so much! I was not comfortable with how many mattresses were not very firm for an infant after looking at them for a while. It is excellent in firmness for an infant on one side, but a little more plush for little ones on the other side. Mattresses of this quality are exceptionally well made, the covers are beautiful, and it smells clean and fresh. The purchase I made for my baby is of high quality.
