I work on semi and dump trucks as a professional diesel mechanic. The first and last truck on which this tool was used was an international 9400i that required ujoints. It worked perfectly for the first two joints before breaking on the third, cracking and stretching the half cup's ends. Hopefully, when it comes up for warranty, the next one will be able to handle more than half of the work. br>*update* The good people at oemtools gave it a warranty, and it's now been running for over 100 u-hours without a hitch. Counting the joints.
joint. The tool does what it says, but MINE BROKE ON THE SECOND U-TURN. JOINT. The first u joint came apart with difficulty when I used it as described. The second u joint pushed through one side, but when I tried to push through the other side, the tool's cup cracked, and it now simply slides off. Hopefully, I'll be able to contact OEM for warranty information. Unfortunately, because my truck is down with a half-disassembled U-joint, I'm now forced to go buy another one from a local truck parts store, this time from a different brand. Joint. br>br>Quality isn't up to par. I would not recommend this product.
It's a cinch to use. I'm guessing the negative reviews are from people who don't understand how to properly use it. Most likely used an impact gun and failed to notice the u joint colliding with the yoke. As the u joint is pressed against the yoke, it becomes tangled. You must use the tool while keeping an eye on the u joint until it reaches the yoke. When the air gun reaches the end of its travel, it will most likely break the tool if you continue to turn it. When using a 3/4 or 1 inch air gun, this is especially true.
For the price, it's a tough tool, and I was surprised at how well it held up when I used it for something it wasn't designed for. I've ruined many different brands of these as a heavy diesel mechanic, and I think this one will last me a long time. I was able to put a 2. I put a 5 foot bar and socket on it and cranked it down until it held my 170 pound body weight while bouncing, never stretching the threads. On the threads, I also apply lubricant. br>Had to use it a few times for this job and had no problems. br>DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF IMPACT GUN WITH THESE.
For the first time, I used it today, and it worked perfectly. For class 7/8 drive lines, this is a must-have item. It's a lot less expensive than a lot of others, and it's also better quality.
I was planning on purchasing the tiger tools one, but I do a lot of U-turning. joints all the time. Instead, I went with this one. For the money, it's a great deal. I'm sure the one from Tiger Tools will last longer, but this one did the job just fine.
I was skeptical at first, but because I have a bad hip now, I didn't want to crawl under the truck and do it the old school way, which involves putting a jack under the driveshaft and heating the yoke ears with a torch until the cups pop out, which I've done for 30 years. This thing worked like a charm and wasn't too expensive; I'd recommend it to anyone.
It really works. Have two.
