Questions & Answers

Is this applicable to both sides or just one?

the two parties

Is it possible to purchase just the boot for this particular part?

If the boot is broken, the security of the system is jeopardized. It's pointless to just replace the boot.

Will this fit a 4x4 Toyota Tacoma (1st gen) from the year 1996?

When I grease it, how often should I do so, and where does the old grease go if the boot is sealed?

I only grease my boot if I notice it isn't full of grease or if I suspect the grease has become contaminated with water (for example, if I drove through a deep puddle). If you go too far, you'll end up with a headache If you fill the container with grease, the old grease will simply escape through the crack in the seal.

These don't last; I put them on my tundra three years ago and they still don't work
3/5

It's ripped on both sides. The rubber boots aren't "accordian" shaped and don't hold up well to compression. One side is already clunking as a result of wear. br>br>I'm going to try ACDelco, which appear to have a boot design that is similar to the stock joints, allowing for more flexing and compression.

It is a direct fit for the Toyota Tacoma SR5 4WD from 1998, but it does not include the rubber boot
4/5

This was a direct replacement for the front upper ball joint on a 1998 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4WD. It was simple to install in the vehicle with the right tools. The only disadvantage was that it did not include the rubber boot required to replace the ball joint. The picture appears to show the rubber boot, and it's been a while since I've replaced a ball joint, but I seem to recall that they used to come with all of the necessary parts, hence the four stars. I'd buy it again if I needed it in the future, but the boot would have to be purchased separately.

The part is of good quality
4/5

The rubber boot can be difficult to install. On my 1996 Toyota Tacoma 3, I installed these. 4 liter V6 4x4 This part appears to be of good quality and has performed admirably in my truck over the last two months. If you don't clean out the bore and the upper and lower surfaces of the steering knuckle, the installation will be difficult; the rubber boot is also an interference fit and can be tricky to install. Once I found the right size cylinder to wrap around the base and tap on with a rubber mallet, it was simple. I believe getting the rubber boot on would have been much more difficult if I hadn't had a steel cylinder (which I had from a front end suspension service tool kit). Using the cylinder as a tool for installation made things a lot easier.

Product is excellent, but installation is difficult
5/5

My 1999 Tacoma's lower ball joints were beginning to show their age, so I decided to replace them, as well as the uppers, before they failed completely. These Moog UBJs are a great product, but if you don't have the right tools (a press), they can be a pain to install. There are some alternatives to using a heavy-duty press to get these things seated, but I wouldn't recommend them if your sanity is important to you. My Tacoma's stock uppers were smooth, but these are grooved for a comfortable, secure fit. To get these things in the grooves, you need to use a lot of force, which I didn't have the tools or time for. I ended up removing the old uppers and simply taking the arms to a shop to have the new uppers pressed in for a small fee. br>br>BOTTOM LINEbr>br>BOTTOM LINEbr>br>This is a solid product that appears to be on par with, if not better than, OEM joints. It's well worth the money, but if you don't have the right tools, the installation can be a little difficult.

It's a fantastic product that fits like a glove
5/5

Great product, exact fit; however, be cautious when putting on the dust boot. I had to press it on, and the first time I took it off, the boot ripped; I couldn't think of a way to put it on in any other way. I couldn't find the boot on its own, so I bought a second UBJ just to get the boot (Moog, can you do something about that?). Keep an eye out on the inside of the boot for a marking indicating which side goes on the inside. Be prepared for a major pain in the buttocks when pressing the UBJ in. One of the UBJs I ordered was missing the zerk fitting, but I ordered it from the warehouse deals section, so I can't blame Moog; I guess Amazon didn't notice until it was returned. Also, the zerk fitting is an odd size; I tried two packs of zerks and none of them fit. I've had the UBJ on for about a month and have done some light offroading with it.

This is an excellent stock substitute
5/5

These are heavy duty ball joints, and everything about them is beefier than the stock ubj I removed from the tundra with a ton of play. After replacing the clicky passenger side ubj, I realized my driver side ubj was in need of replacement as well. So now I have two of these guys, which is a huge improvement in the quiet department. br>br>Tip for putting the boot on: use the same cup you used to remove the ubj; it should be the same diameter and will make installing the boot more enjoyable!.

You'll save money and time
3/5

I'd heard so many good things about Moog parts that I decided to order them in January 2020 and have them professionally installed. They're also broken and no longer covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

One Star
3/5

There were no cotter pins or boot rings in the packages. This is also being returned. 02mm larger than original ball joint, so I had to go to NAPA and have them measure it, and then I had to buy the NAPA ball joints, which fit perfectly. After 3 hours of trying to get this part in, I was told to get it measured, and it is too big for a 2001 Tundra 4x4.
