It helped me shorten a new chain and mash down the rivets on a new master link today. This chain kit feels like a quality tool that will be able to do several chains for me in the future. br>br>This was my first time doing a chain and it was a lot easier than I expected. br>br>The two most important things to remember when using this tool on your chain are to read the instructions and make sure the tool is on the chain straight before tightening it down. br>br>In case anyone is curious, I replaced the chain on a 2018 Honda Rebel 500.
Before using this tool, the first thing I did was watch a YouTube video about how to use it. The most important part of that video was the instruction to grind off the head of the old rivet on the chain before pushing it out with this tool. This lowers the tool's stress level significantly. The old rivet then easily pops out, and this tool is designed to precisely peen the new rivet's head over the old rivet's head. br>br>By grinding off the head of the old rivet before using this tool to remove it, this tool will last a long time without being damaged. (If you're replacing an old chain, you can simply cut it up and throw it away without having to remove any rivets. ).
It's a sturdy tool, and since this was my first time performing chain maintenance, I took my time and carefully read all of the instructions. To make it easier on the tool, I ground the existing rivet head from my old chain flat. Now that I've used it a few times, I've discovered that pressing the rivet type master link plate onto the pins (press fit) and flareing the rivet takes some force. I tried using a shorter open end wrench, but it didn't work (and it hurt my hand!). I could easily put more torque on the large bolt and feel when there was increased resistance once I switched to my standard length socket wrench. Then come to a complete stop and inspect the situation. Success!.
On a 525 chain, bend the breaker pin during a break so that pins are flush. I decided to upgrade to the RK Racing because the quality and ease of use were a night and day difference. Parts appear to be of good quality, attachments appear to be well-fitted, and the instructions appear to be well-organized, clear, and simple to follow.
I'm not opposed to spending a lot of money on a good tool. This is what I used on my 35 race chain mini bike. It performed exactly as expected. This product, as well as others from RK, is highly recommended.
The flare then rivet tool is a better option. It has a light weight to it, and the first time I used it, I thought it was about to break. I've completed four chains so far, and none of them have broken. The clip press was used on a dual sport chain, and it's still going strong.
I really like how easy it is to use. Cutting the old chain from my bike took about 2 minutes, and the instructions were simple to follow. I purchased an RK chain and was unaware that it had a rivet type link. I continued my search and came across this collection. The set arrived two days after I ordered it.
It worked perfectly after I tried two or three $30 ones and they all broke, so spend the extra money and get this one instead of the motion pro $100 one. It worked perfectly for riveting the master link on my vortex sx3 v3 chain.
