Is there a retaining pin included?

It does, in fact, have a retaining pin. I purchase a lot of these, and this is the first time I've discovered the pin and shrink tubing folded up inside the cover.

My tiller is from a laser sailboat, and the main piece of the tiller is square, with a round extension. Is there a way to make this work with the round extension?

Yes. I have a Sunfish square wooden tiller with a round extension, and this piece fit right into the old saddle, saving me the trouble of drilling new holes in the tiller.

Is this something you'd use to fix a shattered joint?

Yes, it's a fully functional joint replacement.

How big is the rubber part that goes inside the extension?

Inside the extension, the shaft diameter is. 525

I'll be overjoyed if the new one lasts 13 years as long as the old one did. This is a nearly identical part from the same manufacturer, and it's very adaptable. It was simple to swap out the part. I recommend that you watch the YouTube video of the replacement process; That was extremely valuable information. Replacing it, on the other hand, is fairly self-explanatory. evident. Just keep in mind to turn on the heat. Before you attach the joint, shrink tubing over the tiller extender. This joint is designed for a tiller with a flat top made of wood or a square metal tube. A curved adapter is required for a round tube tiller.

It is not cheap, but it is of high quality

This is a very high-quality product. replacement of high quality I would have given it five stars if I could have purchased the rubber piece and shrink tube separately for $10 instead of paying $20 for the entire setup. You'll need to drill a hole in the rubber shaft for the locking pin, and you'll be grateful if you remember to put the shrink tube and plastic cover on the tiller extension before putting it all together. The two screws for mounting are not included in the package. You should re-read it. Make use of the previous versions.

Tiller extension is firmly attached

This is a fantastic tiller extension. The firm attachment to the tiller is one of my favorite features. However, it would be even better if there was a way to separate the extension from the part of the tiller that is firmly attached (2 screws). Someone said there was an older model that slid laterally, but it wasn't as secure. A conundrum: some detachment with a strong grip.

Shrink tubing isn't there anymore

I've bought this part from other vendors before, and it always came with a small piece of shrink tubing to hide the screws or rivets that held the part in place. Despite the fact that the image on Amazon depicts shrink tubing, this time it was not included. br>Apart from that, I give this a five-star rating. You must inspect them on a regular basis because they will eventually fracture. However, it is an excellent part that moves in all directions without binding or play.

It was exactly what the doctor had prescribed

For a 2008 tiller extension that had separated, this was exactly what the doctor ordered. Just a word of warning: Make sure you have a cover on the assembly before you heatshrink it, as it won't go on later - Without a doubt, it was my blunder. It would have been nice to have a second piece of tape for those of us who did it incorrectly in the first place. But it's not the manufacturer's fault.
