do? Why does it lock up the clutch so you can build ?

That does not cause the clutch to lock up. The fluid pressure is presumably used to assist the transmission shift. I'm not sure exactly why, but I think it's for fluid pressure.

This is a great lock- It is operated by a solenoid

I installed this solenoid in my daughter's 2000 S10 Blazer and it worked perfectly. Changing the harness is way cheaper than replacing it entirely.
