On my 88 OMC Sunbird, I installed the tool in neutral and made the adjustment with the tool while it was in neutral. When I had made that adjustment, I shifted to forward and loosened the lock nut before turning the adjustment wheel until I could lock the prop into place. The adjustment wheel lock was tightened and I adjusted the same way for reverse, but for reverse you need to loosen the bolt at the front of the arm and adjust it for the opposite direction, again until the prop locked. I had to move forward a bit after that. It took about five minutes to shift, and it has been fine for the whole season. I have never experienced this kind of smooth shifting without noise before.
I previously paid a lot of money for someone who said they knew what they were doing to do it incorrectly for me. Additionally, you might want to look for resources and videos online.

My 1989 Four Winn's 200 Horizon OMC Cobra 5 could easily be adjusted with this tool by setting its new replacement transom shift cable properly. This is Ford. I saved myself a great deal of time and labor by setting the dimensions to 7 9/16". You may use the same 1992 design if you use it.

That is what should be done

It's supposed to work because it only measures the distance on the cable and centers the shift mechanism on the outdrive. I have a 1970 omc Cobra with a Chevy 305 engine, and it has always worked fine.
