Is this compatible with a 2009 Range Rover Sport and do you need to buy 2 of them, one for the drivers side and one for the ?

There is no way to tell if this will work on a 2009 This is what I used on a 06 LR3. I would guess that it would also work on the 07 LR3. It came with two when I bought it. When I bought it, it used one for each side.

I guess they understood there was no problem with your hose, and they just needed the grommet to close it

The grommet is likely rotted/degrading and leaking water into your truck, which is why you're buying this. I am happy to report that! Because the grommet on this fitting can be removed easily, it is easy to install on your truck's original hose that is still perfectly fine. This saves you a lot of time and effort. There was definitely thought put into making these replacements when they were made.
