Yes, this is compatible with that model number.
I can't speak for a 1997 model, but my 1993 25hp Johnson worked flawlessly after this, despite the fact that it had previously been without a spark. It should fit your 1997 model, I believe. Simply ensure that everything is properly grounded.

I had mine replaced while performing an ignition tune-up. Everything appears to be in working order. I had a bad spark and a jerky idle. This power supply, as well as the coils, plugs, wires, and timer, have all been replaced. Now it runs a lot smoother.
I was let down. Five loose connection wires that would need to be cut and spliced were included, but they were not ready to plug in (molded plug) as shown in the photo. In a marine application, you can't just crimp and splice like that. Useless. I'll be returning it.
When I ordered this, I didn't have the part number, but it fit the description, so I bought it. Because the wiring did not have the same pin configuration for colors as the original, and two connectors were missing, it was a little misleading. I had to return it because I was unable to use it. Before ordering, double-check your part numbers; the description was not correct for my application.
I had a weak spark and tried replacing the coils but it didn't help. This bolted on and fixed the faulty spark. It now starts easily and runs smoothly.
There was no spark in either of the cylinders. I used a voltmeter to check my coils, and everything seemed to be in order. This is what I've come up with. Sure enough, it fixed the problem, and I believe the motor now runs even better than before.
It worked perfectly. It corresponds to an OMC Johnson part number that has been updated. In under an hour, you'll be back on the water.
This fixed my Evinrude 8hp engine, which had suddenly stopped cranking.
It's fantastic.
