The cooling system on the 99 grand marquis had been neglected for quite some time. I installed a coolant filter inline on it. A total of three times, all new hoses, a new reservoir, and a new water pump were flushed. The G-word is filled with During the first 25 miles, the coolant and the air filter had clogged up. In fact, I observed great heat output was coming from the heater core since this filter was installed on the outlet side of the heater core. As a result, the coolant was dwelling in the heater core, therefore reducing my heat output. My heat temperature returned to normal after I enlarged the hole with a drill bit. I've managed to reuse the first filter so far by draining the old coolant out, then seeing all of the rust and debris drain out, then rinsing out the filter and lots of fine particles came out as well. That's normally not recommended, but the pipe is going to clog again soon enough.
After fabricating a mount for the coolant bypass filter, i installed it on my 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Druamax Diesel pickup truck. Upon opening the filter can after a year of use, I checked to see what the media had captured. A considerable amount of casting sand, gasket material pieces, iron particles, and other fine particles could be found in the casting area. During the subsequent years of filter replacement, particulate levels decreased. It is my main concern that the cooling system coolant (I use a high quality, 150,000 mile propylene glycol cooling system for gasoline and diesel trucks) can become contaminated with debris and polymerize to plug radiator cores when it reaches end of life. Filtering these particles out of the stream is what this filter does. Filters like this one don't need to be changed often, and they protect internal cooling system components from abrasive wear.
The amount of rust was not too great, but enough that flakes of rust were visible It had been cut open the first time to check what it held and I was impressed with the "gunk" it caught, the second time not nearly as much was caught, and the third time I didn't cut it open because it was contaminated with crud and corrosion. It remains to be seen if some of the darker particles have been filtered or if they are rust/corrosion particles. For all I know, that filter had been on for about 18 months/10k miles, while the first two had been on for less time. It's easier this time to pull this one for the simple reason of checking it sooner rather than later. I've ordered another for the next change, however.
