Questions & Answers

On my 4th floor, I'm going to install this unit. Has anyone had a problem with the supplied gasket, or did they use rtv instead? Is it necessary to install the gasket with it wet?

I'm not a huge fan of television and only watch it on rare occasions. I've always used Permatex Super 300 Form-Fit Gaskets for this kind of application. Gasket Sealant is a product that is used to seal gaps between two surfaces I'm guessing I've been using this for at least 40 years. I've never had a bad experience with it. Simply apply a thin layer to both sides of the gasket. It's not overly thick; just enough to keep it from rusting. Because it's sticky, it also helps to keep the gasket in place.

What kind of motor is this supposed to fit? 5 or 4. ?

It corresponds to the number four. Others may be able to wear it, but I'm a size 4.

Is there a set of screws included?

No, the gasket is the only thing included. However, if your screws aren't damaged, you won't have to replace them.

This is listed as aluminum in the part number, but another customer has stated that it is iron. Is it one of these?

This device is made of aluminum.

For a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ, this part is a perfect fit and replacement
5/5

I bought this thermostat housing because the one I had was starting to show signs of wear. The installation was simple, and the provided gasket ensured that the replacement was leak-free. Make sure the gasket surface is free of any old gasket material. br>br> Because the old housing had a RTV gasket from the previous owner, I needed to use a wire wheel. When installing the bolts, make sure to torque them properly so there are no cracks or malfunctions. br>br>Torque specifications for thermostats: 13 ft lbs (156 in lbs)br>br>When this was finished, I had to replace nearly all of my cooling system. It was a good investment
5/5

It's better than the original. This was purchased for my 1995 Jeep ZJ. This purchase made me extremely happy. br>The coolant housing before I painted it is shown in the first photo. It looks good, but I decided to paint mine. br>The second and third photos show a comparison to the original OEM that was removed from my jeep. I am pleased with the quality and workmanship, which is identical to OEM. However, I did notice in the second photo that the large opening is slightly different, but possibly better. The finished installation is shown in the last photo. br>I am extremely pleased with this; there are no leaks, imperfections, defects, or cracks, it is clean, and it is simple to install if you have the necessary knowledge. This is something I would highly recommend to anyone, and it saved me time from having to clean up my old one.

If you value a flat mating surface, this is the option for you
3/5

If you require a flat mating surface, I would suggest purchasing something else. If you enjoy re-sketching your home, this is the place for you! br>The first two times, it dripped like a sieve from the same spot. The surface of the head was spotless: All of the old gasket material had been removed, and the brakes had been thoroughly cleaned. The bolts were torqued to the specifications. br>I used a bunch of thermostat RTV and the gasket for the third time. It lasted about 10 minutes before it began to leak, this time slowly. br>It was brand new and had the Dorman stamp on the neck. br>The original did not leak, but because it was 27 years old, I decided to replace it as part of a new thermostat and coolant flush. br>Instead, I'm using JB weld to repair the original housing.

Leaks were caused by a crack in the roof
3/5

It appeared to be fine until it was installed, at which point we noticed water dripping from nowhere and beading on the housing's exterior. br>Had to go through the trouble of removing everything from the engine bay once more to get this off. Then I noticed a hairline crack on the inside that had spread to the outside (as seen in the photo). br>According to other reviews, the product does not lay flat or flush - It's possible that this was the issue, and that's what caused it to crack when it was tightened onto the engine; in any case, we ended up using the filthy old housing we'd removed, which was much better than this.

This is an excellent, low-cost alternative
5/5

This was an excellent fit for my 2004 Jeep Wrangler X (4. 0L). After replacing the thermostat, I first tried using my existing housing with a new gasket, but there was still too much crud on the original housing from the old gasket. It poured out like a raging torrent. I simply applied a little adhesive to the new housing to aid installation after completely scraping off the remnants of the old gasket on the manifold. I torqued it down to 156in (13lbs) and it worked like a charm. There isn't a drop to be found. I also needed to buy a new thermostat sensor to install in the new housing because I couldn't get the old one off.

Excellent Substitute
5/5

The OEM unit had corroded through on one edge, causing a leak, so this was an excellent replacement. Because this unit has a little more corroded material on the edge, it should last a lot longer before leaking. Other buyers have expressed concerns about the gasket's quality, but I found it to be adequate.

Before you put it in, make sure it's free of flaws
3/5

I bought it a long time ago and went to work on it when I finally got all the parts to replace the entire cooling system together. This part, on the other hand, was not finished properly and does not fit flush to the engine; at first, I thought I had a bad gasket fit, but when I put in a second gasket and it still leaked, I looked closer and saw that it has a slight curve to it as well as a crack on the inside; I simply cleaned the old one and reinstalled it. It wasn't an expensive part; I'm just leaving a one-star review to encourage people to look at it more closely before disassembling their cooling system. The simplest way to test it is to place it on a flat surface and rock it back and forth.

Jeep XJ is a direct replacement
5/5

In my 1996 XJ, it fits and works perfectly. In the 4. Before you install the housing, do yourself a favor and tack the thermostat into the head with some rtv. If you don't, the thermostat may shift during installation, resulting in a leak from the bottom of the housing. And a gasket sealer will come in handy.
