However, the nut on the Autometer aftermarket speedometer is 18mm while the nut on the original is I have to come up with a solution to this problem.

Perhaps the cable is too long for the standard beetle, and the super beetle would be a better fit? The item on Amazon specifies that it will fit VW beetles made in 1972

I think the cable should be shorter by about one foot.
