These seemed a little tight when I first received them. The tumblers loosen up immediately after being sprayed with silicone lube. They fit well in my hitch and hitch accessories, and I expect them to last a long time if I give them a good lube every now and then. br>br>If not, I'll be back to report.
I'm a big fan of these, and I picked up a few on the cheap a year or so ago. After just a few months, they became difficult to lock and unlock. br>br>For me, these have two man advantages:br>1. The key can be inserted more easily because the lock is angled. The pin goes about 8 inches under the carriage on the other ones because the keyed position is not angled. It's a real pain in the buttocks.
2. They're both programmed with the same key. Yes, this time I got a better deal.
This is the best match for my 2004 Duramax's factory receiver. Because the trailer plug bracket is in the way to the left, there are only a few locks that will fit. Other locks with a bend on the end also have a tendency to wear an oval into the side hole. Because my receiver is 2 1/2", I purchased the longer pin lock and swapped one of these lock heads onto the longer one, allowing me to use one key for both pin locks on my hitch extension.
The only criticism I have is that you have to slightly unlock them to fully activate the locking mechanism. Or it could just be the pair I got. In Eithdr's case, it's a minor niggle, and I'm still completely satisfied with them.
The lock is very nice. The keyhole is perpendicular to the pin, which allows you to access it from the back while keeping the length short enough to work with Teslas (the hitch on a Tesla is mostly covered, and there's only about 2" of clearance on the left side due to the trailer electrical plug). This lock has made me very happy.
Look at the second lock in the image above because that is the one you will receive. From the first picture, the 1479DAT 5/8" receiver lock has been redesigned. The key hole used to be aligned with the pin in the previous design. While this may make it more difficult to remove the lock from the tight spaces beneath a truck bumper, there are some vehicles where the new 90-degree lock simply won't fit. off by a degree design of an axis Make sure there's enough room around one side of your receiver for the lock cylinder housing to fit. The chrome finish is also a source of concern. br>br> Chrome-finished receiver locks, in my experience, are not suitable for long-term use. Term used in areas where there is a lot of precipitation and road deicing is done with salt. To protect the decorative receiver covers from theft, I keep my receiver locks in place all year. I've cut and/or hammered off a number of "chrome finished" receiver locks over the years after they've rusted themselves to the pin hole and turned into a crusty eyesore. This has not been an issue with the stainless steel ones. Rubber coverings are only marginally useful for weather protection, and they primarily protect the lock cylinder, which is brass anyway. While chrome resists corrosion to a degree, the lock's location behind the rear axle means it's constantly exposed to a highly oxidizing bath of saturated salt solution, abrasive debris, and water. This is also something to keep in mind if you're going to use the lock for a saltwater boat. If you plan to leave the lock on the majority of the time or expect to get a few years of trouble-free use out of it, a stainless steel unit is the way to go. br>br>This lock is fine for occasional use, possibly even seasonal use; it is sturdy and simple to operate. It's also keyed like a regular lock, so you can get duplicates or replacements cut at most locksmith shops or home improvement stores. Other brands, most notably Reese, use a unique square shaft key that is only available from Reese. br>br>In conclusion, be aware of the design change and the implications for your application, expect it to rust out over time, and if you need more than the two provided keys, you can easily obtain copies. br>br>04/09/2019 UPDATE: I just finished removing this lock from my receiver by beating, cutting, and drilling it. With the lock in the receiver, the locking mechanism had become stuck. The good news is that the 90-minute time limit doesn't apply to the 90-minute time limit. I will not purchase this product again because of the degree key configuration, which makes it easier to position the drill bit for drilling out the frozen lock guts.
Strong and well-built. One thing I don't like about it is that you have to use the key to lock it because the locking end won't snap over the post unless you turn the key slightly.
This is a fantastic device. I finally found a lock pin that isn't designed for a hundred different uses after years of searching. This is a perfect fit for both a 2019 Ram 1500 and a 2017 Mercedes GLS. Normally, I don't give ratings to my purchases, but this one is deserving of one. It would not lock without the key, according to one person. Mine doesn't have a key, so there's no way to unlock it. It's EXTREMELY NICE.
