Will it fit a Cavalier Z24 from 1998?

This cable is designed to work with performance shifters that have been purchased aftermarket. With a factory Cavalier shifter, I don't think it'll work.

Is the 80605 cable compatible with the 80688 shifter on a 1979 Camaro? Even after all of the adjustments, it appears to be 2 inches too long?

I'd recommend Summit Racing or Jegs for this question. They both have extremely knowledgeable personnel who would be better suited to respond to your inquiry.

For my custom application, it worked perfectly

This was used to connect two B's. To a C6 transmission, an M shifter was added. It worked out perfectly, but keep in mind that the bends should be kept to a minimum. Binding will occur if the bends become too sharp. But I'm sure it'd be the same for any shift cable. I had no choice but to run this close to my headers, but it appears to have had no effect.
