Questions & Answers

What are the dimensions of the hitch?

2" in diameter. Class 3. To 4. Hitch

Is this only suitable for hitches of class 3 or 4? Mine is a standard 2"x2" hitch rated up to 3500 pounds, but it says it's a class 2 hitch on the label. So this isn't going to work for me?

The tongue weight is a part of the "class" requirement. This is the maximum amount of weight that can be loaded vertically onto the steel receiver for this carrier. You're talking about the towing capacity, which is 3500 lbs. This has nothing to do with the amount of weight that can be loaded down on the receiver, which is the only thing that matters when it comes to something like this that is suspended in the air and not in contact with the ground like a trailer. To put it another way, this may fit your receiver, but you won't be able to approach the 500-pound weight limit without risking failure.

Once you've installed the carrier, you're ready to go. Is it possible to add a second hitch, such as a bike hitch, to the back?

You'll need a dual hitch adapter for that, so you can pull a trailer while using the hitch carrier.

Is it possible to transport a deer using this method?

Yes, this will work for transporting a deer, in my opinion. So long as it doesn't weigh more than 500 pounds.

Amazing long-term durability! I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, but I'm confident I'll never have to! I've been using a roof-mounted luggage rack on our recent trips, and it's been great for freeing up space inside the vehicle
4/5

My gas mileage, on the other hand, took a significant hit (avg. Without it, you'll get 30 miles per gallon, while with it, you'll get 20 miles per gallon. So, after reading a lot of reviews, I decided to try out a hitch-mounted cargo carrier. The MaxxHaul was one of the more affordable carriers with a reasonable weight capacity. I was specifically looking for one with a raised frame to prevent luggage from sliding around or falling off the rack. br>br>It comes in a reasonably sized box, with approximately 7 pieces to assemble (possibly more if the support bars are counted as extra pieces). The process of putting it together is straightforward. To keep everything together, align the main bar in the center and the right/left cages on either side, then run the bolts through to the center piece and tighten them down by hand. To hold the left and right sides together at the top, add the support pieces and tighten all of the bolts. After that, just add the two reflectors and you're ready to go. br>br>On a related note, make sure the metal is facing backwards where the reflectors are mounted. I mounted them backwards the first time because I wasn't paying attention. It took about 5 minutes to unscrew the nuts and bolts and fix the problem, but it was much easier to avoid doing it incorrectly in the first place! br>br>It's a good size. Under the tarp (in case it rains), I can fit a full-sized Igloo cooler and a large suitcase next to each other lengthwise. In the attached photo, the cooler is on the left, the suitcase is laying flat on its back on the right, and I have a lawn cultivator behind the cooler and coming across the top of the suitcase, which is the bulge hanging off the right. We'll be packing a few more suitcases next time we travel, so I'll stack them on their sides so I can fit at least two in the carrier (possibly all three; I haven't measured yet) and one on top of the others. br>br>The carrier is a little heavy, but it's light enough to carry or lift to the top shelf for storage when not in use. I put it in my vehicle's hitch, stepped up on it, and then did a couple of good jumps to see how durable it was. I'm a big guy (I won't say how much I weigh, but let's just say it's enough to keep me on a regular diet), but the carrier felt very sturdy. I was more concerned about damaging my car than I was about damaging the carrier. br>br>When the carrier is first installed, it rattles around a little because there is no luggage to add weight. I was worried that this would happen while I was driving and cause a lot of road noise; I considered ordering a stabilizer, but it wouldn't have arrived in time for the trip, so I decided to take a chance and see what happened. I'm happy to report that simply adding a single, fully loaded suitcase to the hitch is enough to prevent it from making any noise or rattling while driving. br>br>The only reason I docked a single star is because the power coating was not applied properly. I had two spots that weren't completely covered and were beginning to rust. It was simple to remove the rust with some light sanding, and I was able to cover those spots with metal spray paint without any problems, but I would have preferred to see a nice, even powder coat over the entire carrier when I first took it out of the box. br>br>Overall, this is an excellent carrier that far outperforms my expectations in terms of durability. My gas mileage on my most recent trip was just shy of 29 mpg, so there was very little loss due to the lack of direct wind drag on the back. If you're looking for a hitch-mounted carrier, I highly recommend this one; however, if yours looks anything like mine, you may need to do some minor touch-up painting.

The best value for money! But
4/5

First, don't overtighten the main four bolts when putting the basket together. To align properly, the two support bars require some wiggle room. Have a can of semi-gloss black spray paint on hand to coat the bolts and any scratches to keep them from rusting. br>However, I really like it; it's a great product for the money!br>I just need to figure out a better way to package it. Mine arrived scuffed due to the frames being stacked on top of each other. Paint that has been dented, scratched, and chipped is already rusting. br>If you're looking for a cheap basket with no regard for appearances, this is it. It only requires a little maintenance to keep it from rusting and to extend its life.

With the following configuration, the product performs admirably
5/5

With the MaxxHaul 70107 Hitch Mount Compact Cargo Carrier, I used the MaxxHaul 70209 carrier bag. 53" x 19- (Perfect fit) 1/2" In addition, I made use of the Cocoweb Chrome C- Lock Heavy Duty Locking 5/8" Inch Hitch Pin with Weather Guard Protection (a little more expensive, but two of them means you won't return home to find your cargo carrier gone after a restful night in a hotel far away); two stabilizers (one on the hitch extender, one on the cargo carrier hitch attachment) and a Reese hitch extender/lift For the first time, I used the Winnerwell Anti Rattle Hitch Tightener. On the extender, the Towever 84701 Super Corrosion Resistant Trailer Hitchs Tightener Stabilizer Cross Clamp No Wobble and the Towever 84701 Super Corrosion Resistant Trailer Hitchs Tightener Stabilizer Cross Clamp No Wobble are used, as well as the Towever 84701 Super Corrosion Resistant Trailer Hitchs Tightener Stabilizer Cross Clamp On a cargo ship, stabilizers are almost a necessity. br>Over the course of the trip, I stayed in seven different hotel rooms. br>I didn't want to deal with the deafening wind noise from the car topping the carrier bag, and I believe the wind resistance also reduced overall miles per gallon. (If I can find the right combination of comfort and cost savings, I'm all for it. ) )br>In the middle of August, I drove over 3000 miles across the country to Yellowstone National Park. br>It rained lightly in Denver for about 45 minutes and heavily in Oklahoma for about an hour. (The bag had a thin layer of water and dirt on top from the road, car, and rain, but everything inside was completely dry. ) )br>Unpacked and repacked 4 medium suitcases, 2 sleeping bags, and 3 pillows for each hotel stay (heaviest/widest bags to the bottom laying flat provides more stability, and stacking two by two suitcases laying flat helps the carrier bag shape. ) )br>The straps that come with it are quite long. It is not necessary to remove the top ones once they have been connected to the bag. By lifting the buckle, you can easily adjust the top and bottom of the garment. By lifting the buckle and allowing the feeder cable to slide through, the feeder cable can be easily removed from the carrier. Lift the zip flap, unzip the cover, and place it back in its original position. There's no need for a ratchet strap or anything like that. When used with a SUV hitch, the extender with lift keeps the carrier bag from getting caught in the exhaust tubes and also allows you to lift your rear door. br>I found it easier and more appealing to simply face the vehicle with the bag. So you're not a walking advertisement for MaxxHaul, the blank black side faces backward. (As much as I like their product, I despise being a walking/driving billboard. ) The zipper opens facing the vehicle rather than the back, but with the cargo carrier on the extender hitch, you can sit in your SUV and peek into the bag/bags without everyone behind you seeing what you're looking for. (I'm not trying to be strange, but if I need to find my charging cable in my suitcase quickly, I don't want everyone to see all of my colorful underwear:) ))br>There is one thing I had to work on, and one suggestion I would make to the manufacturer to improve their product: the straps tend to trail too far to the ground once cinched down tight. When it comes to strap length, the top and bottom buckles are related, but even the best placement resulted in some straps trailing. I used some rubber covered bending wire to fold them up and tie them back onto the strap, but some simple velcro straps at the end could easily solve this problem. This kept them in place while moving and kept the straps from flapping in the breeze. br>Overall, a fantastic set of products that made the trip more enjoyable by allowing the kids to stretch their legs in the cabin and reducing incidents between younger siblings.
