Questions & Answers
I purchased both the Surco rack and the Surco J600 Roof Rack Hard Top Adapter for Jeep JK, and I had everything I required. Although the installation took some time, the system itself is quite clever. Others have responded that they purchased additional front gutter mounts from a variety of different manufacturers, and I'm not sure why. You'll have everything you need to mount the rack on your Jeep thanks to the hardware included with the rack and the hard top adapter. It's sturdy and secure, and it doesn't rattle or make unnecessary road noise. The rack is one of my favorites.
Well, I used Thule crossbars with the gutter connector for the front, but you should know that this connector is designed for a specific type of roof rack, which I didn't use, so if you use the Thule crossbar, you'll need to drill holes in it and the upper rack to secure it to this type of rack connector. It worked for me, but it isn't a simple bolt-on connector because it lacks the slide connectors found on thule connectors.
Yes, the front gutter attachment as well as the back gutter attachment are included. The rails, on the other hand, will have to be ordered separately.
The rack cannot be mounted without the cross bars. Although this is designed for the Surco rack, I simply purchased the back supports and a Thule crossbar from Amazon, measured across the Jeep to center it, drilled and mounted the cross bar to the J600 with bolts and lock nuts, then used a standard Thule gutter mount for the front, and mounted the rack I wanted to it.

First, it's inexpensive, and second, it's detachable, allowing me to keep it attached while removing the Freedom panels and even the entire top if I so desire. There is no drilling or modifying the top in any way. This is a major benefit. These things are rock solid once they're fully installed. When I picked up our kayaks, the person who loaded them must have weighed around 230 pounds because he grabbed the rear mount with one hand while lifting the kayak and himself onto the side of the Jeep, causing it to tilt slightly sideways, and the mounts never moved. Solid as a rock. The 60" rails hung over the top a little too far for my liking, so I paired them with the 53" Urban rails. Overall, I would suggest them to anyone looking for a reliable, well-rounded solution.
With our carrier attached, we just drove 600 miles in stormy, windy weather. There were no issues at all. I got the 53-inch Surco crossbars and had to wrap them in black paracord to get rid of the whistle, but I was aware that this could be an issue before I bought them. I have to concur with one of the reviewers. I wish there was a torque spec for these because I feel like I could tighten them until they broke the roof. I just tightened it up until it's snug, and now I'm able to rock the Jeep back and forth. When we go on road trips or camping, I feel very safe with these in my jeep, and we now have enough room for our dog and three kids.
This is what I have on my 15 JKU, and I adore it. I looked for a long time for a rack to mount my kayak J racks on, but on a Jeep, it's either a full cage or cross bars that attach to the hardtop gutter rails. Neither option appealed to me because both render the freedom panels ineffective. By placing a cross bar across the back of the Surco rack, this is avoided. I would recommend a more permanent installation because there are foam pads that get compressed during the installation and taking them on and off would render them useless and potentially scratch your top.
This is, in my opinion, perfectly acceptable. It does the job, but it isn't particularly elegant. I've driven my 70-pound kayak to the lake in a 2dr Jeep Wrangler on highways up to 80 mph and on rocky trails. When the hard top is loaded, every bump in the road squeaks and creaks. I was worried it would crack the hard top, but it didn't happen on our last trip, so I don't think it will this time. br>br>Another issue I had with this was that the instructions did not include torque specifications, so I was afraid of overtightening and cracking my top, or undertightening and losing my load on the highway. br>br>Assembly was relatively straightforward; The only challenging aspect was torqueing down the front gutter mounts without scratching my hardtop. It's a tight fit because the nut is so close to the top of the nut.
The set I received was used, as evidenced by the scratches all over it. One end cap was broken, and I had to shave the others because they didn't fit. The rubber inserts that keep the front gutter rack from sliding are missing. In addition, some of the welding areas had significant rust. Except for the crossbars, I had to sand it down and re-paint it. I'm missing a few pieces, and I'm in desperate need of them!.
a load of nonsense There is no cross bar in the package. THE BARS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS PRICE. This information is lacking. The description is extremely misleading. This is a SINGLE ITEM, as well. It's a SINGLE SOLITARY USELESS BAR that's part of a roof racking system. a load of nonsense utter nonsense.
When you don't want to bolt on a large cage or spend the money on one, this is an excellent Jeep accessory. I used it for two kayaks with four J-hooks each. It was great because of the hooks. It's a lot more solid than I had anticipated.
I was overjoyed to find a roof rack for my two-door Jeep Wrangler, and this one fit perfectly. I'm thinking about switching out the front feet because I need to wear my t-shirt. To remove the cross bar, I have to unscrew the brackets, which I'd like to do in a more convenient manner. Otherwise, the rear crossbar system is excellent, and I no longer have a massive "cage" encircling my vehicle!.
