Does not dry hard so it is suitable for some uses. Nevertheless, I was looking for a gesso that would actually dry hard, and would be sandable, so I could use it as a sealer for wooden I don't think this is gesso like that. There was a dried skin on the inside of the lid, which I peeled off when I opened the 32oz jar containing the gesso. As soon as I touched it, I noticed that it was a very rubbery, flexible gesso. It even leaves marks on your nails when you press them It is the type of gesso that you are looking for, so this is it. This is not the gesso you want if you want it to dry hard, be toothy and chalky, and be sandable. My mistake was not realizing that Golden also makes a "Sandable Hard Gesso". I should have purchased that In the future, I may try the Golden Sandable Hard Gesso instead of the Grumbacher in order to try something more artistic. As a rubbery product, I think this Golden White gesso is different than most others I've tried in the past. Maybe they should describe this product in such a way so people know that if they want a hard, sandable gesso, they should instead consider Sandable Hard Gesso. Gesso is not generally rubbery and soft, and I would not have expected this to be the case.
I always use golden gesso to prepare canvases for painting with oils. Golden Gesso works well whether I am using canvas panels, stretched canvas, or birch panels. The order was delivered 24 hours after I placed it, so I could get to work right away prepping more canvases for customers.
