The answer is yes. The Amiibos are region-free, so they are no longer limited to one region. This Japanese Sonic and an Ike were the ones that I used on my US-based Wii I have a lucario unit from Europe as well, and it also works.
Apparently, this amiibo can be used with the Nintendo Switch system and Super Smash Bros.

Because it was a Japanese import, I was concerned that it wouldn't work, but it did work just fine! There was only one difference the box was written in Japanese. The box was ripped open so fast that my son didn't even realize he was doing His Sonic gear showed up on the Nintendo Switch as soon as he scanned it. I am a happy mom because my son is happy. This purchase has made me very happy.
The eye details are amazing, as are the gloves, the sneaker details, and the size is different than I expected. Last but not least, compared to Ryu or another tall character, the size is a lot greater. Now a box arrives in fine without any problems, however maybe the top will be folded, which is how it fits in the box as a whole, but if you request two as in my example, it may come to you one on top of the other and you may avoid the double top. The item is in perfect condition at arrival and exactly as described. Japan may have made this device, but it works great in the United States as well. The Sonic one works well with the Nintendo Switch and my son was thrilled to have it.

Great job. The amibo I ordered arrived today and I got to play with it. I loved his details and had a lot of fun fighting him but I was a little disappointed by the piece of plastic that holds him.
