When you turn the base, the batteries should line up, but ours turned opposite of what they said, and only one of them Other batteries were not working, so we changed them but they did not work. Unless you don't care about the light aspect, I would not recommend a purchase.
Our pool includes these and I bought them for my daughter. The water has to completely cover them. The candles remain lit until some of the water evaporates from them.

Toys can be used to play seek and find. As far as the toys go, they liked that the toys were easy to hold and that the lights worked well. As this was a very recent purchase, I am not sure about its durability at the moment. Nevertheless, the sun and heat is brutal in Arizona this time of year.
