Honestly, I would not do anything less than mount a swing to a 4 x 4 post. mounting it to a 2 x 4 and drilling a hole all the way through will cut down the 2 x 4's structural value.

Since there is such a wide variety of options available to the customer, the swing hangers do not come with hardware. In a letter contained in the package, the sender states as much. The things we're talking about here certainly do work hard. Nevertheless, what a rip-off! There were some things I should have looked into more thoroughly. A simple toddler swing can't handle the amount of power these things are putting out! There is enough room for an entire classroom of toddlers to fit in them. It's totally unnecessary to swing on a simple bar! In all likelihood, you will not need to hang full school buses full of children from these. I would suggest something more basic and much less expensive. Lastly, they do not come with the screws that have been recommended to secure them to the wood like those used on some of the other basic swing anchor hooks. It was just an additional purchase to offset the costs associated with this light weight toddler swing.

You will not find any instructions or hardware in the package. This was attached with 1/2" galvanized lag screws (4-1/2 long) that had a 5/16 pilot hole in the thread. You can't get rid of those babies. As an alternative, you can use lag bolts instead of a hole in your beam, but if you're following this guide, you'll need a 7" bolt to be able to go through the beam, nut, washer, and lock washer.
