Our motorhome came equipped with a white detector that began beeping at random intervals. We took it out, only to discover the issue later. It was a VERY old, out-of-date piece of equipment. Two wires and two screws were all that was required to install the new one. I didn't like the color until it was put in. It has a more natural look. We require it, but we do not require it to be visible. We are now adequately protected, and it also appears to be so.
The detector was exactly as described and arrived on time, despite the fact that it was manufactured in August of 2017. Instead of the stated 90 mA, we measured a current draw of 127 mA @ 13 volts. I had hoped for a current draw of 90 mA instead of the 200 mA unit it replaced, but it's still better. The 3" x 4" back dimensions are spot on. The alarm went off after a few seconds when we tested the unit with an unlit propane soldering torch on a low setting.
It was simple to install because this one fit my old 4"x3" cutout hole. Everything is fine except for the color, which is a little off. It is important to note that even if the unit continues to function after 5 years, it must be replaced at that time. It has an alarm that will sound when it's time to go bye-bye, which is after approx. 5 yrs.
This product was used to replace an older LP alarm from a different brand. Because it is "UL Listed," I chose it over an Atwood product. "Atwood claims that their product has been tested according to UL procedures, but it does not state whether or not the tests were passed. A product must pass UL's testing in order to be UL Listed. This type of product is tested and certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
This item is only good for 5 years from the date of manufacture, after which it must be replaced. It was already a year old when I received it, so it would need to be replaced in only four years. A refund was issued after the item was returned.
The manufacturing date was only one month before my purchase date, which really impressed me. When I bought the last one (from somewhere else), it was a few years old. Given that these detectors have a limited lifespan (roughly 5 years), finding one that has been sitting around for that long is a disappointment. It's impressive that it's only been a month.
The price is absurdly low for what it is. However, it was significantly less than the amount requested by Camping World (more than $100 after taxes). It was a simple drop-in replacement for my 17-year-old one in my Lance camper, and it only took 5 minutes to put in.
This product has been in my possession for a few weeks. But it wasn't until this past weekend that I was able to install it. It's a carbon copy of the old one in my camper and fits perfectly in the original opening. I'm hoping I'll never have to use it, but it's nice to know it's there and ready to go in case I need it.
