I purchased them for my daughter and grandson to assist them in their rock and mineral collecting. Long-wave UV lamps (when supervised) produce relatively safe UV that is suitable for use around children. In terms of the purpose intended, they work as expected and, in fact, they perform even better with synthetic gemstones like rubies and spinel. To the amusement of my grandson, they also show where the family dog has had "accidents" in the past. To prevent battery leakage from damaging the battery holder, you should replace the original "heavy duty" batteries with alkaline batteries as soon as possible. this is a decent portable longwave UV light for an entry-level price.
