The normal uses of it would be as described above. It's compressed fit 1/4 inch pipe style, so it expects 1/4 inch pipe fittings and connections inline. In that case, a bit of copper pipe can be used as an adapter. *br>If that does not happen, you can simply remove the nut from either side, but that size works with 3/8 pipe connections, unless it is one designed for 1/4 pipe.
You can use the 1/4 fittings as long as you have the correct ones. Check the supply line if it is "humming" or if that is part of the problem. This is a nice device to use on the humidifier line that shuts it down.
The line to your humidifier must be 1/4 in order for it to fit and The shock absorber measures about 3+ inches long and is about 2+ inches wide across the fittings. I have tested it, and it works. A "moaning" sound was coming from my humidifier line when the door was open, and this stopped it.
Nonetheless, I received this as a gift from my brother who used it to remove the knocking he heard when he turned the knob to release his water filtration unit. The best I can tell you is that he is happy with the solution, but I am unsure of how it would work for
