As a result of the taper, I can sharpen bits of varying sizes. It is safer to sharpen the edges and the side ends of the tool because I need not worry about harming the tool. In the process of buying two Scotch eye wood auger bits, I discovered that one of them had not been sharpened. surprised, since I would want my customers to be able to use auger bits straight out of the packages if I were selling new auger bits. Using this file will not be helpful in sharpening your general Irwin/Russell Jennings auger bits. Such an auger sharpener may be useful for sharpening augers that come with really large tractors. As it does have safety edges on both sides, I intend to hold onto it on the chance that the style and contours of the file will prove helpful at some point. This is way too big to be used for sharpening old auger bits, so don't buy it if you plan on doing that. To test whether I can keep the edge sharp, I will use this on some hard metal to see how hard it is.
