No, you slide it from 1/4 to 5/16 head by pulling forward/sliding it.
As I recall, the shaft beneath the plastic has small ears on it to keep it from slipping.

I purchased it in order to gain access to capacitors that were difficult to reach. When a stubby is required to reach a difficult-to-reach and small area. However, when you extend the top for a larger head, this will help. It returns to its previous position with relative ease. Perhaps a twist in the lock tip would be beneficial. When it slides back and you have to reset it, it's extremely inconvenient. As a result, I've been favoring the single stubby.
Klein Tools have always been a favorite of mine because they are well-made and withstand daily abuse. This screwdriver is ideal for HVAC work or any other task that necessitates working in confined areas. The sliding shaft design of this screwdriver works perfectly with no issues. I would strongly suggest it to blue collar workers who rely on their tools to make a living.
It's convenient that you can easily switch from 1/4 to 5/16, but the screws are difficult to secure because the socket is shallow and the magnet isn't as strong as I expected.
I wish there was a way to turn it with a screwdriver. The product is great, but I was disappointed because I didn't read the description and assumed it could be flipped and used as a screwdriver. I need to go out and get the other shorty now. If it could flip, I think it would be much better.
This is a unique stubby that includes two of the most commonly used sizes for disassembling HVAC and appliances. It takes about a minute and a half to figure out how to change the size.
Working in confined spaces with both 1/4" and 3/8" diameter appliances 5/16 hex screws are easy to use and take up less space in your tool bag.
I'm hoping they'll make one that can be removed from the handle and used in a drill. Meanwhile, I'm going to buy some of these and removing the handle so I can use them in the drills we use every day in our shop.
Solid, but I wish the bit could be removed and inserted into the drill. Klien, I'll give you free advice!.
