The package comes with both a wood and a steel wedge, I believe.
In my case, it was in the shape of a teardrop. While many hatchet, maul, sledge, and axe handles have been replaced by me, I found installing this handle to be the easiest job by far. As far as I could tell, the grain was oriented properly and should last for years to come.

Having replaced several handles before, this was one of the easiest jobs I ever did. The stub of the broken handle was carefully measured after I removed it from the handle. It was a perfect replacement with the dimensions given.
