Questions & Answers

What makes this axe different from the Hunter's Axe?

The hunters axe is a smaller, straighter profiled axe, as Jollyman correctly stated. Rather than limbing a tree, the Hunter is better suited to dressing out game. Still an excellent product, but the Small Forest model offers more versatility.

Is it necessary to sharpen it on a regular basis? What kind of sharpener do you use?

It all boils down to how you handle it. If you treat it nicely at least once every six months, it will return the favor. Water stones from Japan are used by me. Finish with a leather strop after using 1500 and 6000 grits. If you chip the edge, you should sharpen it more frequently, but dings and dents fade with time and you won't need to sharpen it. I don't sharpen mine very often, only when I want to impress my friends with a razor-sharp edge.

Is this an improvement over Wetterling's axe?

Both exist in my possession. Only in terms of fit and finish are the Gransfor products superior. They are, however, axes. You are (should you be? ) will be breaking things down with it. In terms of aesthetics, this use helps to level the playing field. Once the patina develops, they begin to resemble one another. Wetterlings are people who live in the mountains. The sheath appeals to me more.

There's nothing quite like a tool for council
3/5

The eye hole is not touched by 90 of the handle. The fit could not be any worse, and it appears that a tac weld was used to hold the handle in place at the top of the axe. Several dents and a small chunk had been removed from the bottom of the handle. br>br>The axe arrived razor-sharp, as in hanging hair sharp, and would pass a straight razor's sharpest shaving test. Unfortunately, the head had a significant "crack. " br>br>After doing some research, I discovered that this is perfectly normal and has no bearing on performance. This feature was missing from my council tool woodcraft axe. I'm not sure why this is acceptable. Overall, it's a letdown, but at least it's sharp.

Customer service has vanished, and quality has deteriorated
3/5

I had a SFA made by Anders (initials AS) about 5 years ago that is still in perfect condition; however, I recently ordered three as gifts, all of which were made by Erik Sjostrom (stamped with ES), and ALL THREE had issues, some of which were cosmetic, but some of which were more serious. br>br>On one of the axes, the eye had large gaps in it. It was simply too big for the axehead. The edges of one of the axes were asymmetrical. One side had a much wider angle than the other, which is a complete farce. Another axe had a lopsided poll and a lot of tooling marks. The quality of the hickory handles has deteriorated as well. br>br>I've tried contacting them via email and through their website several times, but they've simply ignored me. I've read that this is happening to others on Instagram and Reddit. This is what happens when a business becomes too successful and needs to produce a large number of handcrafted items in order to make more money. Customer service is lost as well as quality. Shame.

There is a lack of quality
3/5

I own two more Gransfors Bruk axes, both of which are of excellent quality. This axe appears to be a knock-off of a more expensive model. The axe came with a certificate of authenticity from the government. Documentation (in German) appeared to be in good shape, but it was oddly wrapped in heat-sealed bubble wrap. shrinked. That's the first time I've ever seen it. The finish was rough and the handle was completely blond (there was no stain, unlike my other axes). The blade's grind was inconsistent and faceted, rather than the smooth convex grind I'd expected. The axe's head appears to be genuine, with the GB logo and maker's mark, and the heat treatment appears to be fine from a file test. There is also the GB logo burned into the handle, which appears to be genuine. This was either a very clever copy, or GB's quality standards have deteriorated.

Poor quality control and poor craftsmanship
3/5

I can't wait for my German-made axe to arrive so I can compare the two. br>I can't believe this axe passed quality assurance. Linseed oil seeps into the seat from the axe handle. The eye has a split in it. I'm going to do a YouTube side-by-side comparison of my German made axe, which is $60 less hours than this axe, to compare the quality soon.

The durability is a letdown
3/5

This axe has a fantastic appearance. It came with a razor-sharp edged blade, which I appreciated. It is unquestionably excellent in terms of ergonomics. My only gripe is with the blade's edge. I only use it to cut mesquite wood for the fire pit or bbq on rare occasions. I also cut it from a mesquite stump. Despite the fact that it is not a hard wood, the blade edge is constantly chipping and keeping it sharp is a chore. even after a single use Maybe I got the rare bad one, despite all the positive reviews and the brand's good reputation. If that's the case, I still paid a premium for it.

THE MUSTARD IS CUT WITH THIS AXE
5/5

Cliff Jacobson recommended this axe in his excellent book "Expedition Canoeing" because he had so much useful information in it. I was familiar with some of them, so I went with his tool preference. He is absolutely correct. You can put your life on the line for it. With this thing, you can shave! It has excellent balance and a well-designed handle. It's the ideal car size. For a pack, it's quite large, but you get a lot of power in a small package. Additional benefits include: br>Steel made entirely of recycled scrap metal. br>A strong and flexible hickory handle that helps conserve natural resources by extending the handle's life. Veggie-based br> This axe, like Mr. Jacobson's, is made of vegetable-tanned leather that is free of heavy metals and biodegradable. br>.

Axes from Sweden as collector's items? What a lovely tool you've got there
5/5

It arrived "sharp as a tack" and functions flawlessly. It's a fantastic little tool. (Though the GB sheath is a bit "cheap" in comparison to Condor Tool's excellent sheaths. ) ) The current demand has driven up the price of this specific brand-name tool, but I believe it is still a functional, if not artistic, piece of equipment. If you're on a tight budget, shop around for a small ax. There are a few that are quite good. I recommend getting this one right away if you can afford it. This name brand may well increase in value over time like Randall Made knives.
PS, My Wetterlings small hatchet went up in cost 50% as Wetterlings was "folded" ) I can't attest to its worth; only the current price, if you can find one.

It's not even close to what Gillette has to offer
5/5

That's right, you read that correctly. This guy isn't even close to being beaten by Gillette's razor. Hair trimming and manscaping will be taken care of by this Gransfors as well. br>br>This is without a doubt my favorite axe for camping and hunting in the woods. br>br>Hipster Gillette is capable of chopping down a tree, let alone processing it. This guy, on the other hand, is certain to succeed. br>br>To be honest, I'd like to see Gransfors offer some better leather to protect the head of these beautiful axes for the price paid, but considering you can take down and process a whole moose with this axe, process wood, and maintain hygiene such as shaving, I'm not complaining. I suppose I'll have to go out and buy my own leather. The weight is very well balanced. br>br> The handle curvature is fantastic in the hand, as comfortable as a tool can be. Craftsmanship is a term used to describe the ability to create something from scratch. Gransfors Bruks, for crying out loud.
