I would say up to 3/8 inch in diameter, but if used for branches 1/2 inch thick, it becomes weaker at the tip.
Because it's not stainless, it will rust. To avoid rusting, wash and wipe the surface clean.
The use of a branch cutter like this with the spring is unusual. It's a classic design that can be operated manually without the use of a spring and is quite effective.

The majority of gardening cuts can be made with regular pruners, but they can't get close enough to make a flush cut on bonsai. These, however, are possible. Because they're flat, they're not truly concave cutters. They make an inward cut on most branches and roots that comes out nice and clean, despite the fact that they are faced rather than curved. They have a solid feel in the hand and come pre-assembled. oiled, wrapped in plastic, and packaged in a lovely presentation box, ready to give as a gift The only drawback to these cutters is that they aren't made of stainless steel. That was something I was aware of when I purchased them, and I'm fine with it because I'm a neat freak in general. If you get these cutters wet and don't dry them right away, the uncoated steel surfaces will rust; after each use, I rinse them under running water, wipe them dry, and spritz them with WD-40. If any surface rust develops, simply buff it away with 220 grit sandpaper and you're good to go. br>br>These cutters are well worth the money, and I'm confident that they'll serve me well for many years. Wazakura has gained a new customer, and I intend to purchase some of their other bonsai tools in the near future.
It's quite effective. br>Don't squander your money on low-cost Chinese tools. More money should be spent on Japanese or Taiwanese bonsai tools. In the long run, one will save more.

These are the best clippers I've ever used in my 40 years of gardening, particularly on Japanese maples. They're simple to use from any angle and get right up against the branch's collar. I haven't tried them on bigger branches yet. They're fantastic.

Right and tight, but treat the cutters as if they were a cast-iron skillet - Make sure there's no sap or juices left on the cutting edges. Otherwise, the steel will stain and pit if not cleaned and oiled after each use.
