Questions & Answers

What's the best way to treat outdoor wooden furniture with this product?

Using Epifanes clear varnish is the best way to protect outdoor surfaces from UV damage. The product ranks highly in popular boat building forums. It is easy to apply and requires numerous coats with long drying times when it's low in moisture. A large amount of time is required, but it comes to fruition in In my experience, it's not worth the time or effort to recoat old or low quality outdoor furniture. I used the can for maple wood pickup bed boards and followed the instructions on the can. I think it is absolutely stunning!

Epifanes is clear when it dries or does it have a yellow or orangey color?

John is correct, my experience has been that it dries clear but fades over the years. After a year and a half of a transom being exposed to the elements, it still has its original color. I don't have any complaints about Epiphanes at all, although it's an expensive product. Rarely do I express myself in such a manner.

What is the difference between epifanes and ?

The most common oil-based stains use linseed oil as their base. Dry up most of the way and do not let it get muddy. Allow the linseed area to dry completely, and wipe over it with a good paint thinner to ensure no puddles. Naphtha is what I use for my pre-treatment To remove wax and other contaminants, wipe the surface with a soft cloth. In many cases, if you apply Epifanes according to instructions, they will evenly coat the oil. The linseed oil base has allowed me to use it over many different colored stains.

2 coats on a 50 square foot job is how much would I have to do. A foot. ?

A couple of factors determine whether or not it will work. It depends on the type of wood and if the varnish is thinned out (recommended). Typical porous wood like oak would require dozens of coats of thinned to reach the surface. A 50 / 50 mixture would be the best way to seal, with about 3 / 4 coats sanded in between. In order to achieve the classic result I have always experienced with this product, I will need to apply 3/4 coats full strength and sand between each coat. BTW, my teak bench and chairs look like they are covered with thick ice after a summer out in the weather. Incredible

A good deal better than all the claims! August 19, 2015 The temperature at all times of the dates is 65 to 68 degreesF

Epifanes Clear Varnish (1000 ml (about a quart)) There is a temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. About 80 to 90 percent humidity 85 percent. I would like to recognize the following dates on August ** First coat, position A gallon of milk is 63 cents plus 27 cents. It costs $50 to ship at Amazon or $14 to ship at FedEx. It's 63/gal at Home Depot and you can pick it up there for free). The varnish coat was applied with a foam brush on a 1962 Chris Craft wooden yacht that had been sanded and stained. As a result of consecutive wet and windy winters, the mahogany was in poor condition. The surface is dry to the touch within four days After 6 hours there is still a soft/fragile feel (as with any subsequent coat. (A little tight While the first coat showed signs of superior gloss, it still felt as if there was still need for additional varnish coats to fill in the wood grain. This is what August 16 looks like * No sanding in second coat, A foam brush was used to apply 1. I am available August 17th from 800am to 500pm. No sanding on the third coat, step one A foam brush was used to apply 1. Here's a beautiful gloss you can build on. It now has a high gloss and wood grain is beginning to fill in nicely. The following dates are for August 19th The wood has been lightly sanded with 320 grit wet/dry (wet) paper, wiped clean with damp cloth, and then left to dry naturally. Those who have completed the fifth coat are The brush used in step 1 is of the highest quality. The gloss is now deep and the quality is far superior to any other product I've used so far (I've used many over the It will be applied in four coats of 320 or 400 grit wet paper. I'll wait 5 to 7 days for them to cure, then sand with 320 or 400 grit wet paper and spray When the review is updated, I'll add notes to it. Epifanes lives up to its stellar reviews and looks like many many hours of hard labor were put into this old wood (well, they were, but it looks like many more than what was actually put into it). In most cases, if not all, brush marks are eliminated with this varnish due to its particular spreadability and flowability. As I ordered a second can, there will not be any interruption. I still have at least 3/4 of the first quart and I ordered the second part of the can, so I will not be denied Therefore, the only downside we have faced thus far is this As I live with an owner of a Malamute Husky, it can be difficult to keep his fur off the wet varnish at the moment. Since I can't blame him or Epifanes for that, I just put up with it and go on with my hair picking sessions at night. Enjoy a beer while marveling at the results of this great spar varnish

Now if it is as durable as people claim. . . . ,

If the beer is nice and cold, I may apply an eighth coat (or nineth). Stay tuned for more! I'll get back to you later and what I promised is here 86 25/08/1588 25/08/1588 ** The first coat cured very well, so I sprayed an undiluted coat of Epifanes over it. Undiluted, the varnish simply gels and leaves behind a wavy texture as well as visible texture on the surface. Not because of any real flaws with the varnish, but due to the fact that it gels undiluted. As far as the varnish itself is concerned, it is It is similar to a high viscosity motor oil treatment than a Because I suspected this might be the problem, I only coated a small area of the table. I will sand the surface smooth after this coat cures and re-coat it 2 parts Epifanes and 1 part mineral spirits should be mixed together for the coating. As of 08/26/2015 Using two parts of Epifanes and one part of mineral spirits, I applied the mixture. I will not use this product undiluted in the future because the results are outstanding again. I really like the shine, and it is tough as hell. Have you forgotten about that wonderful That's all right. Despite still blowing fur, he seems to be standing still. Both of us will be happy little boatsters after this has fully cured! My favorite part of this is the video! The 2 is a good choice though A dilution of 1 is required for the final coat. You will be thrilled with the result! It takes only minutes to apply and gives a high gloss. * * * EVEN SO, IF THIS IS A BIT PRICEY ITEM, HERE ARE A COUPLE hints for saving a few bucks 1* *
Once you have used this up, pour the contents into a smaller bottle, if you aren't completely using it all up within a week or so. As a result, there will be less air space, and the remaining varnish will be prevented from gelling. The second is

2. The varnish will start to gel if it is not thinned with mineral spirits. Then pour the varnish through a fine mesh strainer, such as one made by Mr. Coffee. It will help ensure a nice smooth finish when you use it again. By filtering out the majority of the clumps, it will prevent this from happening again. Although I shouldn't have to mention this, I will just in case the McDonald's hot coffee lady reads this, make sure you don't use your coffee filter to filter varnish through. Exterior Varnish from the top of the line
4/5

It is most effective to paint outdoor wood before it is exposed to weather. For a good spar varnish to show off the beauty of wood, you need to do a good job of sanding. On a side-by-side test, Epifanes clear varnish tends to position itself at the top of the list or close to the top of the list A two-part spar varnish that rivals a three-part varnish There are two parts to epoxy. MCCLOSEY, M It's a close competition between War Marine Spar Varnish and War Marine Varnish. Both varnishes last for a long time The addition of phenol to an oil varnish An alkyd resin that has been modified. For Epifanes, solids make up 62% of the total while for McCloskeys, they make up 51% of the total. Is it important that these facts are known? In the long run, (1) A varnish varnished with oil often dries to a softer, more flexible film compared to a varnish coated with short-oil. The phenolic acid (2) It tends to dry to a more flexible film when modified alkyd resins are used than when polyurethane (urethanes) resins are used. The flexibility of wood is essential in exterior applications since the elements affect its expansion and contraction a lot more outdoors. Solids are the residue left after varnish has dried. (3) Solids are the residue that remains after varnish has dried. The average percentage of spar varnish is 62%, which is higher than most other This information is often kept under wraps by manufacturers, but it is a noticeable indicator of what you will get in return. As a result, I suspect the resins, UV light blockers and total solids are responsible for its superior performance. *To be fair to Epifanes, I would recommend eight coats, much more than most other spar varnishes, which typically recommend three. 2 out of 5 based on McCloskeys Using 4 coats of paint. When done correctly, a side-by-side comparison It is a good idea to compare products side by side as per the manufacturer's Epifanes' superior performance can therefore be partly explained by how much varnish is put down between the sun and the wood prior to operation. It's possible that eight additional coats of high gloss coating would be necessary Paints that are high in quality In addition, McCloskey's) would perform The process of applying eight layers requires patience and persistence, especially when you need to wait 24 hours between each one. Moreover, this product has some color to it and will darken wood to a certain extent with eight coats. This is an important step that you should follow Thin the first coat of Epifanes. In order for the varnish to soak into the wood, the pores have to be sealed. My trick is to apply the first coat again as soon as it has dried, so that every area is A very thick substance (almost syrupy) is Epifanes. Unthinned paint needs to be applied with a good brush technique. Because it is so thick, it tends to highlight brush marks somewhat but lapping can be an issue. You should make sure each coat is completely dry before applying it. Two stages of varnish drying are required. In order for the varnish to polymerize, the solvent must first evaporate. It can take days for polymerization to occur. It is easy to sand these products. It is always better to wait 12 hours before sanding another coat of varnish if you don't get fine dust when you are sanding it. Applying more varnish before it has polymerized fully may result in a sticky Depending on the can, it is a good idea to sand lightly between coats as well. You can thin the final coat(s) to no more than 1 mm. I believe a final coat or two of varnish could be thinned to wipeable varnish consistency after many coats of varnish have been applied. In addition to being easier to use, these should self-heal in a short period of time This is a better level than full-time The varnish should be of high strength. A good choice is Epifanes spar varnish or McCloskey's spar varnish for outdoor wood, both of which offer enhanced appearance and protection.

A couple of boats that I have worked on have had great results with teak
5/5

The 250' I recently completed was my most recent project. It is not my first time using exterior finishes, so it is not totally new to me. A couple of boats that I have worked on have had great results with teak. One of my most recent projects has been a 250' cap board in mahogany for The first two coats of epoxy (West Systems 207 w/ UV inhibitors) that I use are always good ones, and then I sand with 100 grit in between. Epifanes varnish is then cut 40% with mineral spirits, scuffed with 320 grit, layered again with 20% reduction, scuffed with fine 3M scuff pads, layered again with 20% reduction, then topped off with mineral spirits. After that, you need to do it once again to finish. While it is mentioned that it is a dark color, it is actually a I have yet to see anyone comment on why the color One thing you want to realize about UV protection in sunscreens is that the more pigment (darker discolorations) in the product, the greater the Generally, the darker the color of your surface, the more durable and long-lasting it is. * When people speak of a (white, chalky finish), that is because moisture has been present for some time. The subsurface was either dewy from being finished late in the day or they pressure washed it and failed to let it dry properly. In what conditions do you know it is time to repaint years after an initial coating? Whenever the finish seems to be hazing or crazing. Simply scuff it lightly and apply two coats diluted with mineral spirit, decreasing the concentration by 20%. I would like to apply. What should I do? Roll the foam sponge on the skin. I would like to caution you concerning the use of the roller when applying the west systems epoxy. You may experience gas bubbles during the cure process. use it as a brush)
The epoxy is a pain, but it provides a great base and west systems products are the best. Looks don't make a good product. Years of experience do. Over 25 years have passed since I started using West Systems. The attached photo (Br>) shows West System 207 after it is applied to the first coat.
