Will it fit a shower opening of 50 1/2"?

Yes, there's an Enigma-type situation here. If your walls are plumb, XO will fit through the opening. Thank you for taking the time to think about working with DreamLine.

Is there a way to adjust the shower opening if it's out of plumb? What if it's off by a quarter-inch or a half-inch?

The Mysterious Mystery XO has no way of compensating for conditions that are out of plumb. Out of plumb conditions are accommodated by some DreamLine models, but you'll need to double-check your measurements at the top, middle, and bottom to determine how far out of plumb your space is. Does the bottom of the door have a seal?

No, the bottom of the door does not have a vinyl seal. To keep water out, a metal dam strip is applied to the threshold. Thank you for taking the time to think about working with DreamLine.

Is it possible for the glass on the outside of the door to be the side with the door handle (to help with water leakage)?

The Mysterious Mystery The moving panel must be placed inside the stationary panel when installing XO. No matter which side (left or right) the moving panel is installed on, there will be leaking if it is installed on the outside. Thank you so much for taking the time to think about DreamLine.

This shower door complements our new bathroom perfectly. The wall must be plumb, according to the product information. The hardware is heavy duty, and the thick glass glides open and close easily. Our walls were out a little, and we made it work without too much effort, but there is no built-in adjustment to make up for an out of plumb wall, which is why a four star rating versus a five star rating. We are satisfied with our purchase in general.
